So I'm updating my CV for internship apps, and I had a question about what (if any) employment experience to include. For example, I worked in a VA hospital as an RA before joining my program. For the research protocols I worked on, I was a group therapist and received weekly videotaped supervision from a licensed psychologist. This seems like relevant information to me, especially considering that I will be applying to military/VA positions, and this is another example of my experience with such a population. Is this appropriate to include?

Also, can I count these as pre-doctoral clinical hours since they were supervised? I don't really need the hours, but they couldn't hurt. Thanks!

Absolutely include it on your CV. Sounds great!

In terms of counting them as pre-doctoral clinical hours, I'm not positive. I want to say you can only include MA training clinical hours and/or post-MA (but pre-doctoral - if you were employed after attaining your MA) clinical hours. But someone else will know the definitive answer to that on here I'm sure.

I would absolutely include those experiences on your CV (and perhaps mention them in your essays). However, it would be inappropriate to include them in your APPIC hours. I would be shocked if your DCT signed off on that.

Thanks for the feedback. If it makes a difference, I did have my masters in psych while employed. Either way, I wasn't planning to count those hours because I thought they had to be obtained during the PhD training program. Doesn't hurt to ask though.

One other CV question- is it better to list the experiences so that you can elaborate on them later, or should you put a brief description of your duties?

Definitely include those experiences! I had some really applicable clinical experience before graduate school as well, and in order to differentiate it from what was approved program experience/APPIC hours, I put it under a different heading called "Relevant Clinical Work Experience". Probably a longer name than needed, but I didn't want any confusion about what it was.

Check with your DCT about those other hours...I think it probably won't count, since you weren't in an official training program. But great experience nonetheless and you can mention it in other ways!

re: CVs...different people do it different way. I did very brief descriptions of duties, client population, etc, but I think some people don't. Not sure what is best; some of the other people on this site who are reading the CVs for internship may have a preference.. I also know some people in my program did them with bullet points, others in paragraph form. I'd get a few copies of CVs from other students in your program who have gone on internship, so you can see options.

Definitely include them and a brief set of details to highlight your duties in the c.v. can be good. Then you may want to develop more of your reflections on that experience in your essay. Avoid verbatim repetition from c.v. to cover letter to essay though;readers want concise, non-inflated versions of your experience and it is aggravating to plow through redundant material. Prior experience in clinical settings is always of interest/value to us and can be good stand-out factor so definitely include it. The hours may not be counted if they were not supervised through an academic program....but they will not be discounted either. Just be direct about them and their value to your preparation for the internship site.
