Wondering whether to do my internship in India or back in America... I go to Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), BLR , but being an NRI I intend to eventually end up practicing back in the states ultimately. I would like some info about the following points... dunno if they are true or not but yeah.....I've heard that doing internship in the states coming from India is tough and it takes a long time because you have to run around getting all the postings you want and waiting for them to start... and then when you come back to India to get your certificate the admin gives you a run around.... Secondly, do you really get to learn much if you do internship in america? I hear that all you get to do is observe as oposed to the internship done in India where you actually get to touch the patient...third I hear that you need american clinical experience when you apply for residencies...If you dont do your internship in America when can you get this experience and is getting american clinical experience after completing internship better or is it better/easier to acquire during internship(in the form of doing internship in america). And finally, what is the exact procedure for doing internship in america or if not that then what is the proceducer for getting american clinical experience post interneship pre residency? Lots of question... Thanx for the help in advance...

lets see, IMO, do your internship in India since your medical school may have issues giving you credit for the American internship. Unless you are sure there will not be a hassle then you can try for internship in USA. The US internship opps are not easy to find for IMGs. I can't comment of the quality of internships here versus in India since I don't know the Indian process.

After you finish all requirements in India - you could look for externships in US Hospitals. These are mostly unpaid learning oppurtunities. This will give you american clinical experience which will come in handy when you apply for residency. High USMLE scores + clinical experience = good chance of getting into a good residency program. Some hospitals that offer externships also have residency programs and sometimes if you are lucky you can be picked up for a vacant spot. This happens if and only if you have proved your worth while doing the externship. Externships give you the chance to gain clinical exp and show case your skills. If nothing else you have the clinical experience and you can request a letter of recommendation from your externship director. A very good thing!

Good luck to you!
