Naive New Med Student Question...

The characters on Grey's Anatomy are continually being referred to by their superior officers as interns. And, that would assume that they are doing an internship. But the other episode, I thought I heard them say something about residency. Soooo, I'm just wondering what's the process for a med school graduate wanting to go into sugery like the people on Grey's.

1- Internship? Starts right after med graduation, right? I always thought it was year 1 of residency. Or does the internship come before residency?

2- Residency? What the hell! Are the people on Grey's 1st year interns or 1st year residents?

3- Fellowship? Sorry for the naive question, but what exactly is it?

After that... Any other specialty training? And how many years at each step?

Intern is the first year of residency. Not that common a term nowadays. But then again, I wouldn't use Grey's as a reference for what residency is like.

Interns are first year residents. Some career-paths (OB/Gyn, Medicine, Peds, General Surgery) have designated intern years built into their programs. Others (anesthesiology, surgical subspecialties, radiology, EM) have intern years in one of the three above categories (usually not OB/Gyn) or a "transitional" hodge-podge intern year prior to beginning the "residency" part of residency (i.e. if you go into radiology, your first year out of med school isn't spent reading films, but taking care of patients on the floor). Interns are, for all practical purposes, first year residents.

First year intern is a redundant term. The term intern is a hold-over from the past when programs were pyramidal and not every intern ended up finishing the residency.

Fellows are individuals who want further training in a specialty after having completed a residency.

Training times in both residencies and fellowships vary depending on the specialty.

First off, bad idea to get a look of medicine by a TV show

Secondly, Internship means the first year of residency. As stated before, some specialties have the internship/first year of residency built into the residency speciality (I.E. if you start OB/GYN, you finish OB/GYN). some specialties have an internship year that is required before you actually start the residency, but counts as part of the residency (I.E. you may match in surgery, but you are an intern first year...you have the choice of finishing in surgery...or, you may be able to switch into another residency (anesth) and still have that first intern year count for that residency)

Residency is just residency...an intern is a resident...it just means that they are first year residents

Fellowship or fellows are those who have finished a residency, but are doing a subspecialty or further training (I.E. critical care in anesthesia....or the number of specialties in IM...cardio, neph, allergy, etc.)

Good info. Thanks! Anyone know if there is a webpage out there with all the MD specialties and the steps (years) required after graduation to attain those specialties?
