My name is Nida and I am planning to attend the University of Georgia this Fall as a pre-veterinary student. I would really like to find a summer internship or job opportunity that will help me collect some experience in the field. All the available internships I have found seem to be for older college or grad students. Please help!

Hey! Welcome! I'm a student at UGA and absolutely love it here! I'm about to drive home from the dog park but I can answer any questions you have once I'm home!

Does it have to be paid?

I'm working at the vet school until the summer most likely. There may be 2-3 openings then around the start of the summer. It's not a job where you get to do a ton of stuff with animals, but it's still awesome to be around the vets and students.

If you're interested in research, you could look at the UGA faculty descriptions and see if someone is doing anything that interests you. Email them and ask if you can shadow or volunteer with their research. I'll be doing that this summer with a vet that will most likely be doing research on cattle.

Not a lot of people seem to be doing this, but if you want to shadow, email vets at the teaching hospital. They are extremely nice and everyone has let me come in to watch so far (small animal, large animal, wildlife so far).

There are a lot of other vet clinics in the area and you could ask them about a job. I doubt they'd want someone for only the summer though. So if you want a job during the semester too, go ahead and apply at some. But a lot of people do this, so don't be disappointed if you aren't being taken by anyone. I do know one clinic that lets you shadow though and another that takes volunteers. There are many that I haven't been to yet though, so there may be more opportunities out there.

If you don't mind searching the whole country or sorting through jobs available for professors, this is my favorite website for internships:

Great if you're looking for wildlife experience. Not very veterinary focused. But I always found it fun to poke through when I was bored and I found most of my wildlife internships there. Some you have to pay for and some pay for you...it's highly variable.
