Internships...Academic or Private Practice

For those who have completed a residency/are a current resident/applying for a residency:

How do you feel about doing a private practice vs. academic internship? I want to apply for an medical oncology residency, but I'm not sure what type of internship is best for that. Obviously every internship is different, but I'm wondering if alot of residency programs would rather their candidates do an academic internship vs. a private practice one.

In the US, almost all the oncology residencies are at teaching hospitals. Some academic residencies give preference for academic internships compared to private practice internships. So if you know that's what you want to do, I would focus on the academic internships realizing that a private internship is better than no internship.
