Hey y'all,

I'm a first year looking for summer ideas. I'm wondering if any of you has worked at a health care consulting (or any other business consulting) firm for the summer after your first year in med school?

I know it would be pretty intense stuff, but I wouldn't mind just trying it out for a summer and just seeing medicine/health from a different point of view.

I was thinking of going to my school's undergraduate job fairs, but it doesn't seem like a lot of good companies come down to Tulane, and I'd also feel kind of weird at an undergraduate job fair. Does anyone else have any ideas?

How else would I attempt this? Should I just send out resumes/cover letters to Stockamp, W.M. Mercer, etc.? Does anyone else know any companies that do health care consulting that I could contact?

Well, thanks in advance

SimulD,

Depending on your goals, a business internship may be valuable, but keep in mind that doing some basic science research for the summer probably will take you just as far and is a more recognized route to residency. That being said, if you do want to pursue this route, you are in a world of hurt. This is the worst recruiting year for consultancies since the 91 recession. At our business school (a top 10 school) a many big time consultant groups are not recruiting for full time jobs, and a few have even thrown in the towel for interns. Freeman (Tulane) is considered a high 3rd tier school which means a company like McKinsey or BCG or even Mercer probably don't come to campus and certainly not in a down year like this. I would recommend to you, go to your business school's career office and see if they have any contacts with any of these companies that you can use. They will have at least some people in each of the top consulting companies (I hope). The top companies are probably: McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain and Co. After that: Mercer, Monitor, Deloitte Consulting and another of the other Big 5 (Accenture, Anderson, PriceWaterhouseCooper, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young).
I wish you luck, don't be disappointed this year or let that be a reflection on yourself if you don't get something. Even the MBA's and BBA's who have been preparing all year to try to get these internships are going to be turned down.

I'd agree with the above. You're not likely to see many internships available this year, and if there are, they will go to the MBA candidates (they, after all, have only one year until becoming a potential employee, while an MD student would have three...)

You could consider looking into the business/administration/health policy side of things also. When I was looking around last year, I found that they were more receptive to a med student doing an "internship" (however, without pay, as many don't have paid internship positions available). I decided just to enjoy my summer 🙂
