Hi there,

I recently got accepted to 2 different summer research programs:

1. The National Institutes of Health
2. Biomedical Research at UPenn

Which of these two do you feel would be most valuable when the time comes to apply to medical school? I am currently a freshman at Penn State.

Thanks!

Look, man, just go to whichever one you want. Any research will look good on your app as long as you understand it and can write and talk about it intelligently. You're a college freshman, so don't stress about your med school apps now. Try to have some fun and smell the roses along the way a little now while you still can. Good luck and hope your research experience is great.

which research project are you most into?

all things equal (does nih sip even offer housing, or is this not even a concern?) id be at penn because philly is likely >> bethesda to spend the summer in (and i have a lot of friends in the philly area). but the NIH has a bunch of enrichment stuff to keep you busy, i hear. cant go wrong either way.

Do whichever one is more interesting to you. If you are interested you will understand it and learn more, which could lead to you maybe getting published. If you enjoy something you'll put more into it and get more out of it. Med schools will only want to see you understood it and not just cleaning equipment to pad your application.

whichever pays more. both are legitimate and highly regarded so you can't make a bad decision with either. and since you're a frosh, you don't really have a high level of expertise in any particular field, so you would learn a lot from either. there's a slim-to-no chance of getting a pub out of either (just 3 months as a frosh-- yeah right!), and if you don't have a personal preference for living situation, the final deciding factor (off the top of my head) is money.

more money is more valuable because you can apply/do secondaries/interview at more schools.

seriously though, i hope you spend the money on something else before that time comes, and either program is great.

i know a guy who worked with the nih on some prostate thing during high school and he says he'll get published soon. i think you can def get published, especially if you land in a productive lab and can come back to help out in subsequent summers.

Thanks for the input! I really like both programs and they both pay about the same. Do you guys think getting a research internship at UPenn improves chances for getting admitted to UPenn College of Medicine?
