I'm thinking about submitting an interservice transfer from the Army Dental Corps to the Navy Dental Corps upon completion of my Army obligation. Does anyone have any experience with this process? How difficult is it? When should I start?

Interservice transfers are approved on a case-by-case basis, so no one can say for sure how difficult it will be. However, I would imagine that it shouldn't be exceedingly difficult since dentists are pretty plug-and-play, the Navy would probably love to have you, and you are planning to separate from the Army anyway. First you have to get approval by the Army in accordance with AR 614-120. The Army will not approve it unless you have satisfied all existing obligations (HPSP, HLRP, bonus, special pay etc...). Once you obtain a conditional release from the Army, you need to get approval from the Navy in accordance with MILPERSMAN 1300-082. As for the time frame, the Navy must receive the application no later than 9 months before the requested date of transfer. If it is approved, you should be able to transfer without a break in service or losing any rank. Good luck.

You will have to complete your obligation and get out of the Army, and go talk to a recruiter the next day. Start coordinating with the Navy recruiter 3-6 months before you get out so they can walk you through the process. If you are still HPSP - this is at least 5 yrs down the road though. You may want to give the Army a chance before you already start planning your transfer🙂

Thanks for the replies. I'm not dead set on the Navy, but I would like to keep my options open. The Navy has a 1 year ACP for general dentist. As you already know, I cannot participate in the Army ACP because I did not attend a 1 year AEGD😡

You can always apply to the 2 yr AEGD - that will transfer to any service, or if you decide to get out can help increase your bottom line.
