After going through five years of General surgery residency can one get training in interventional cardiology? Ive heard that surgery is a dying field due to most of Interventional Docs out there. What will happen with all the guys that have made a living performing procedures that are now being done by less invasive procedures?

Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks

No you can't go from Gen surgery to interventional cardiology, not yet anyway. I heard rumors about CT surgical training involving angioplasties in the future though, but I'm not sure. Kinda like how vascular surgery fellows are trainded to do some interventional stuff, but I'd have to defer to the more knowledgable members of this forum for the 411 on that.

The whole dying field thing, is BS though. How many heart transplants can be performed using a catheter? There are still gonna be surgeons in the future they'll just be doing things differently and and they may not be as super rich as they once were.
