For those of you who have gone through the Rad Onc interview process, I have a quick question. I have scheduled a few interviews and have received basic schedules for the interview day from most of them. Several secretaries have mentioned that I will receive a more detailed plan as we get closer to the date. My question is this: do Rad Onc programs schedule pre or post interview dinners or similar social activities like other residency programs? I am trying to schedule flights/hotel stays and don't want to miss anything. But at the same time, I do not want to wait until the week before the interview to book reservations.

it varies place to place. some do lunch (hopkins) some do dinner (harvard) some pre some post, some both etc. You can call up the coordinator/pd and ask them, explaining youre just working your schedule of flights out.

i cannot stress how variable the places are regarding dinners with residents. The important thing that I would stress is not to schedule departing flights too early the day of the interview. I saw many people do this. It is hard to blame people for not wanting to miss their flights, but I thought it made people look disinterested when beginning after lunch all of their questions were regarding what time they would be done interviewing. If you don't already know, I think my average day included 8 interviews. Even at my home institution where there was no tour I was there until after 3 pm. Also, I learned more about the place when I would stick around at the end and get extra info from the residents after the formal day was over. You will spend a lot of time and effort travelling, so take the time to learn the place you are visiting. I usually tried to get to the place as early as possible the day before just to check out the city and talk to locals. I have a family, so I cared more than some may about what the city offered.

I agree, you'll have more of a chance to learn more about the city and get the potential dirt on a program from the residents if you stick around after the official day is over...
