I have an upcoming interview for a pgy2 position but my current LOR from Pd is not so great, however I have credit for the whole year. how should I convey the new PD the reasoning behind why I am leaving the current program. I am very unhappy and will still be in the current one and need to get out? I am looking for some suggestions, on how to improve my chances and tell the right thing..any advice..

Why is your PD's LOR so poor? What does he/she say? What were the circumstances behind you leaving your current program?

They know you are unhappy in your current program, or you wouldn't want to leave. I would worry more about what your PD's letter says (what bad stuff is in there). You have to address THAT to have a shot at getting the new position. That, and try to accentuate the positive of what you can do and why you like THEIR program.
