i know they say applicants are terrible at analyzing how interviews went, so any input is appreciated.

During an interview for psych, I had 7 different interviews that day. My first interview of the day was with the program director, usually the title intimidates me, and I wish I had an ice breaker interview prior to this one. Nothing went particularly bad, I just feel that we didn't really connect or find much in common, and I was a little more nervous than usual as the program director interview was my first. With about ten minutes left, he says " well so and so should be coming to grab you soon." And then started making small talk, it felt really awkward- it felt like he was done and just wanted to move on. The remaining 6 interviews went great and I found loads to talk about with the other interviewers.

How detrimental is a mediocre/poor interview with the director, when the remaining ones were great? I honestly would love to match here but I feel like I won't be ranked highly. I know it's hard to give input without being there, but any advice would be great. Thanks!

So, you’re in luck! Because whatever they decide or whatever “harm” (and, by the way, I’m sure it was fine. PDs have to talk to 15 people by the end of the day so I’m sure they also can be a little slow to warm up early) should have zero impact on where you rank them!

Rank in order of YOUR preference. That is how matching works. Don't rank based on how you think THEY will rank you. That is how you end up at a place which was not YOUR top choice.
