I have seen several posters who had applied last year and went to several interviews, but didn't get accepted in to any school!!! what happened? what did they do wrong? it seems cruel to make the student fly to the school and pay so much to not get any acceptance...

anyone want to shed some light on this subject?

Well if the person had an outside chance at each school, then odds are they wont get accepted to any school. However, A school will not interview anyone if they have absolutely no intention of accepting that person.

Perhaps they weren't able to communicate well at their interviews (so much as to deter all schools?). Or maybe they didn't update their profile after acceptance? I would think individuals who interview at many schools and don't get in at any of them are rather uncommon...

I have seen same posts from last years where several people reported that they had 4-5 interviews and did not get accepted anywhere or wait listed at some. I think those stories should be considered on case per case basis as it will make difference what school, when applied and how much of interviewing skills such person has. I do not see schools inviting people they are not ready to accept wasting their time in such way....

This is what I am worried about. I have 4 interviews so far, and feel that I am well rounded and interview well, but I am afraid my lower DAT score may bump me down the list. I just think its important to be confident in yourself, yet be realistic that dental school admission is never a sure thing, regardless of your numbers. Treat every interview like it could be your only shot at acceptance (unless this makes you nervous). And try and visualize yourself going there, which will arrouse excitement and help you project a positive attitude.

But yes, this is my ultimate fear. Cause if you do not get accepted after interviews, you may start to think that you (not stats)are the problem..

Interview plays a big part, but usually schools base their final decision using percentages. Like GPA 30%, DAT 30%, Interview 40%. That's just an example. I imagine every school is different. I look at it this way, if your scores are good enough to get you an interview, then the administration believes they are competitive for the school.

Another factor can be when they got their interviews. If they were post December interviews you go in there with 2/3 of the class filled already and are pretty much interviewing for a wait list spot. Of course this all varies from school to school.

If got low stats then you gotta make up for it with personality. Wow the interviewer with your personality and when he pitches you to the committee he would speak so highly of you that you will be just fine.

eh i don't think this is always true.

in many cases you are allowed to call schools and ask for a personal meeting with admission advisor.

i did this is one of schools, and during our meeting he went over the files where your interviewers left comments from your interviews. from the meeting i was able to find out that my letters were fine (i was kinda worried since i asked random profs to write me letters), my dats were good, but there were some comments about my low sgpa and not being confident during interview (which was very helpful since i found out i had to prepare more for the interview and i think i have done much better with my interviews this year)

btw i thought i would hear from that particular school this year since i had personal meeting with the dean of admission, i didn't get invited for the interview from that school this year yet. so having a meeting with dean doesnt necessarily help you with getting into that school, but it did help me with overall getting into dental school process

Gross, UNC's percentages suck.

UNC seems to be very specific in their requirements. They give 40 % of the total points to the interview and rest of their personal statements. I am not talking about OOS who also has to have stellar stats to go with it.
That is something to consider when applying to schools like that. If you good with interviewing skills and can handle your own in any social situation schools like UNC, UF, Pitt, Louisville would be good choices when applying...
Returning to the original OP question those tables done by Doc Toothache also show that if person applied and interviewed at the schools from the top where acceptance is 75 % or more than it is more likely that having 4 interview pre Dec will lead you to 3 or even 4 acceptances come Dec 1.
If one interviewed Conn instate and UCLA, NYU and UOP pre Dec you will most likely see 4 acceptances coming Dec 1.
OTOH if one interviewed Marquette instate and Louisville, NE and LLU you might have 0 acceptances come Dec 1 simply by virtue of lower acceptance rate...
