I've heard appearance at interview is super important--suits, not sports coats, etc. Also, best to diet beforehand--better not be fat or even overweigght, as they select against anyone not trim. Also, don't be caught smoking outside. All true?

don't forget to wear black socks! you'd look like a fool with white

sports coats should be fine, correct me if i'm wrong though...

don't be caught smoking outside? if you DO smoke, then don't be caught smoking AT ALL!

I saw a documentary that said being tall (over 6 foot), and having a mid-body build is a 'plus' for any kind of interview, i don't buy it though.

just be yourself, and if you don't get in - then you have NO personality,

looks like i should buy a pair of 6 inch heels then.. 😛

As non-superficial as we all try to be, the truth is appearance does make a difference. This may seem odd but we all tend to assume that the best looking people are somehow more successful in life. You might as well work that in your favor if it is true. If you can afford the nice clothes then go for it.

As for being caught smoking outside?? Yeah that would be really ironic considering we're trying to be oral health care providers....I mean what would you do if your general practitioner told you that you need to cut your cholesteral intake and your doc was huge? Same goes for being overweight. The last thing I want a healthcare provider to be is unhealthy, doesn't send the right message. Even though we will be "just" dentists, we're still health care providers who have an obligation of encouraging total overall health. No doubt overall health effects our oral cavity anyway. So I doubt being a smoker and overweight conveys your own commitment to health and it won't convey it to your patients.

Whoa! You have sound bytes on your computer?

Don't you mean, that it was nice to 'read'? 😀

Maybe you should also retake 6 credits of English...... 😀

Naw, I show up for all my interviews with a 5 day shadow, a wrinkled t-shirt and cut-off jean shorts...you guys at UoP know what I'm talking about. I don't think looks have anything to do with it. 🙄

Haha I knew it. Someone will come to show that he really cares about HockeyDentist. I know I totally understand your feelings. Sorry for showing sarcasm to your buddy. 😀

Don't you mean to you buddy? and not your buddy! Maybe you should take 6 credits of English again! No, I'm just kidding bro.

Back on the subject, guys I do know that you have to dress well for your interview, but I don't want to be too trendy since, let's face it most of the dental professors and the admissions board are dorks! Who would they show more sympathy for? Someone who reminds them of people that they envied in school or somebody who reminds them of, them!! Just to be on the safe side, I'm not putting too much gel in my hair and I'm taking off the earring that I have.

HAHA another one! Let me break it down for you. Apparently, you brain is not developed enough to process complex information. Your buddy = imbatman's buddy = hockeydentist. Hope this helps. 🙂

😀 😀 I am just kidding bro. Bored at work.

I'm the sort of person that doesn't really like to clean shave. In other words, I prefer to have a little scruff and not look like all of the Utah clones. Do you think its going to count against me for not having a clean shave at interviews?

With your scores, I wouldnt worry about that little thing.

I don't think that adcoms at dental schools can fully understand just how big of a problem utah has with clones.

just play their little game for now.... at least till you get in.

When I showed up to interview at SC, I showed-up with a missing button on my sport blazer, somewhat wrinkled shirt and I was FAT as a cow (215lbs for a 5foot 5inches guy), was late in the admission cycle + the fact that my english was very bad (Mexican guy with very little vocabulary) meant I was perhaps doomed. This is my first year at SC guys and gals. So, indeed looks are a +, but character and self-confidence are by far more important and it will reflect during the inverview...believe me

Like it or not, people do judge on appearances and that is why you want to look your best. Yes, suits for the guys and business professional attire for the girls (skirts or slacks) are the norm. Dental schools are by no means looking for to fill their ranks with a fleet of Abercrombie and Fitch catalog refugees and noone going to measure the brightness of your teeth against a swatch of titanium oxide, ask you how you would solve world hunger with fluoride, or examine your bikini line too closely during the all important and mandatory swimsuit competition. Smoking? Well, as someone who is looking to enter a healthcare related field which focuses on oral health, not to mention the very real and immediate risks associated with the habit, it's probably in your personal and professional best interests that you cease and desist. Along those lines, yes, that is one thing on your list that might tarnish your application. Interviews (generally) are rather relaxed - dental schools want to get to know you, the person and future dentist, and you'll find out that alot of the stuff you obsess over is really trivial in the long run. You'll be fine, and best of luck! 👍

Hi guys,

I have a few interviews coming up (hopefully 😀 ) . Am a foregin graduate. A female appearing for the advanced standing program.

What do i need to wear to the interviews?

Would a pair of formal pants/skirt and formal shirt do or would i need a suit?

PLease reply asap
thanks

I'm very short for a guy so I am very self-conscious about my height. But why focus on things you can't fix? There are sooo many things that many don't have like Aryan looks, nice clothes, height, fashion sense, weight, accents, voice..why bother.

What's my advantage? I have the most kick-ass tie!!!

okay, look professional and put together. that doesn't mean starving yourself to lose weight. be yourself! and don't forget to smile...

Okay, that was wierd...

...since when did Aryan looks = 'something better' than other 'looks'?

I recommend a suit (coordinating slacks and jacket, preferably in a dark color such as black or gray) over shirt and slacks/skirt.

Didn't mean that it was better. I meant that all things being equal, blue-eyed blondes probably have it easier than the rest of us.
