Hey guys, is something like this appropriate for an interview? I have searched and found several opinions on attire but was just curious if the tie and shirt were too flashy. (minus the pocket square)

I don't get that sort of snide Donald Trump remark - it's just a plain black suit with a slightly brighter shirt/tie option. Shows personality, imho.
Who says med students have to be fashion-blind nerdasses? Some of us happen to have style 😎

Just because you choose to wear a conservative outfit does not mean you don't have style. In fact, conservative colors look much better than "loud" colors and patterns in many cases IMO.
This can be true, however the advise for people to stick with the white shirt/red tie look is poor. Everyone does it, and the white shirt/red tie look technically is supposed to signify power, which is not a position that you're in as an applicant or interviewee.
I didn't mean it would be bad or snide. I just thought it looked like a Donald Trump suit.I don't get that sort of snide Donald Trump remark - it's just a plain black suit with a slightly brighter shirt/tie option. Shows personality, imho.

I wore an off black suit, blue shirt, and basically this tie http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=283710&CategoryID=27774&LinkType=PDPZ1 (the teal one)combo to my LECOM-E and DMU interviews and was accepted to both. I don't particularly believe it matters what you wear as long as it is a suit and is not a 'zoot' type or an outrageous color.... Perhaps a pink tie might be a bit much, but honestly who knows. If professors are judging you on your looks then it might not be a school that you wish to attend.
Unfortunately, this is a fact of life. Good looking people get more breaks... Like it or not.
Btw, that's a nice looking tie.
Either I'm good looking or a good candidate/person...I'm leaning to the latter, which I feel is more important.
is it ok if your suit had pinstripes, and i'm talking very subtle thin vertical lines. Hardly noticeable.
I'm asking if it's ok to go with this instead of solid color
something like this:

We are interviewing the schools as much as they are interviewing us, once we're at our interviews.
Some states are more conservative than others. Go with what works for you. I have the red tie/blue suit, but I also have ties with other colors. I will use the conservative tie for more conservative states and schools and then cut loose a little at others. As long as you feel confident, you'll present yourself in a good light.
Whatever one looks best in and makes you feel confident is the way to go.
Personally, I'm probably going with either a traditional stripe or a subtle pattern. Color wise.. probably something darker than the shirt I decide on, even though I have a gold tie with a nice stripe pattern or this pink tie with some blue in it that are both probably my two "best looking" ties, and have gotten compliments for, but I think the gold might be a bit too much.
