Just out of curiosity, how do you guys feel about a colored bottom and a black jacket? I recently came across a really cute teal pencil skirt/black and teal silk shirt/black jacket combo that I could totally rock with some black hose and ankle booties. I like that fact that it is a little unexpected (quirky is a pretty good description of my style) but still in the same form as the other ladies' skirt suits. Also, I have a hard-to-fit body type (petite, just into plus-sized territory, long torso, narrow shoulders, short arms) and will almost certainly have to invest in a custom or heavily tailored jacket. I feel more comfortable investing my dollars into a classic black jacket, but still don't want to go the all-black funeral attire route.
EDIT: Also...not to be negative, but if I happen to purchase an interview outfit and then don't get any interviews (heaven forbid) I would like to at least get stuck with an overly expensive outfit that I actually like, instead of some useless suit that will just hang in my closet and mock me. :-/
There was a girl who wore an orange skirt with a black blazer, and it was cute, but she really stood out for better or worse. I thought it was a bit much, but I don't think the admissions staff and faculty minded it too much. She still looked professional overall. But I would suggest pumps or flats and not ankle booties since those might been seen as a little more business casual. And you don't have to do black, stores have suits with color and pattern but are appropriate to business professional with a little extra.
I am dealing with the lovely blessing of being 8 months pregnant at my upcoming interview. If you think it's hard to find a suit for your body type, try finding one while pregnant haha. I finally found a very business appropriate dress and a blazer to wear with it. Will I be looked down upon for this? Timing is so fun and ironic sometimes!

So here's my dilemma: I have two suits (both awesome, and I've had for years). I have a basic black suit and the one shown below (both are accompanied by pants). I really like they grey herringbone one, but don't know if it's "too much" or professional enough?! Suggestions?View attachment 25204
I'm also considering maybe buying a skirt to go with my black suit, so I'd have an option...I think I look better in a skirt.
I apologize if this is a dumb question, and I searched this thread before posting it. I have two interviews coming up at cold, cold places (DMU - Nov and KCUMB - Dec). Checking the current temps (30-50ish degrees), is it acceptable to wear a some kind of coat to the school to keep warm, or will the suit be enough?
Again, I apologize, it's just that coming from Hawaii, I have no idea what is acceptable or not in terms of winter fashion. Other than that, congratulations on all who have gotten acceptances, and good luck to those who have interviews.
Thank you.
You should wear a coat. Peacoats are considered formal winter attire so I would go with that if you have it. Personally I think a ski jacket would look quite odd with a suit.
Oh and wear regular business shoes as well. Wearing snow boots or uggs with a suit is a huge faux pas no matter how cold it is.
Edit: a nice leather jacket would look fine as well
thank you, touchpause. I had to google what a peacoat was, and it looks spiffy. and by the way, congratulations on your DMU acceptance. 👍

something like this is my 'professional' look during colder weathers
major difference being my suit is only 2 button!
Haha nice. It looks sharp!looks sharp!!! I think we more or less have the same set-up. And congrats on your acceptances, ChineseKid.
