Public service announcement: You know how suit jackets sometimes come with the back flap sewn shut with a little white thread? You are supposed to remove that thread. I have seen a couple of fellow applicants walking around with a little white X on their back.

We told one applicant, but waited until after interviews to avoid making him nervous/self-conscious. (Debated vs. making him not look silly to interviewers.)

Bowties are cool.

What about winter dress coats? I really don't want to shell out even more money so what would be the best(read: cheapest) place to buy a decent winter dress coat to go on top of my suit especially seeing as now the weather is getting rather frigid in some parts of the country? I wish I could just use my regular winter coat but I already know that would be a big mistake since it's not formal enough, right?

SOmeone told me to get a top-coat from the gap for like 50$. somebody else here from a cold area might be able to give us better advice on this tho

Honestly, I don't think anyone would care if you used your regular winter coat. When I interviewed in the NE, people wore all sorts of coats, not just dress ones. Plus you don't wear your coat for the actual interviewing part and can often store it for most of the day. So I'd vote for not worrying about it -- but if you want to find something a little dressier, you can usually find cheap wool coats at places like Macy's. Or even check out Burlington Coat Factory or Ross.

I second Dr. Bagel. Bring your suit jacket to any shop that fits your budget and peruse their coats (try them on over your suit jacket). I don't think I saw this at the Uniqlo near me, and the fit looks awful in the picture, but I'm sure something like this would suffice.

But guaranteed, you'll see most people wearing straight-up winter jackets on the interview trail.

I just found out that the place I'm likely to sign attendings do not have a dress code. Those suits will be mine.
