Hello!

With my first interview on Monday, I am preparing everything for a smooth experience. My mock interviewer suggested having a slightly more unique background. I didn't do anything special for last cycle's interview or the mock: my background—my room—was just blurred.

I'm considering choosing a wall for a background instead of just a blur. Would having a bookshelf + one of my framed sports photos be an appropriate background?

*I know backgrounds don't make or break an interview, but I agree that a blur of my room is not the best*

I'll test a few angles and backgrounds to see which is the least distracting and has the best lighting.

You want the focus of the interview to be on you, not your surroundings. A relatively neutral background is best, although plants or art in the background is fine.

I'll also say that professionals use a virtual background or a blurred background. I don't think you need to fret over that as much as making sure you have proper lighting, cameras, microphones/speakers, and the internet bandwidth.
