How much do you think you'll spend on the interviewing process (i.e. travel costs)? I'm planning on interviewing at about 10 programs in two geographic regions and would like to keep things under $2000. This will include two flights, several nights of hotel stay between interviews, rental car, and food. How about the rest of you?

It will be interesting to see how much people actually have spent by the end of things. Maybe I'll put up another post in February and you can say how many programs you got to and what kind of money you put out.

Good luck!

As I recall I spent approximately that much - driving to some interviews, flying to others, 5 years ago. I haven't spent that much for fellowship interviews, but I'm going to less places and a couple are paying for the hotel.

just $2000 eh? that's pretty impressive. so far i've interviewed/rotated at 4 places in 4 albeit very different geographic locations and spent about $3000.

new suit/attire = 1000.00
flights so far = about 1500.00 (but I have turnaround flights i.e. get in the night before and leave after interview)
hotels = used travelocity so most were included if not payed for by program
one rental car = 70.00
accessories = 300.00
and I'm guessing about 1000.00 total for leisurely spending

Probably about 5000.00 total for me. Interviewing at 12 places, but like I said most of this is flight fare even though I'm interviewing in the same state at different times, I'm flying back down each time (I have a new baby so you know!)

You spent a grand on a new suit??!! Wow. That makes me feel poorly dressed. 😳

I think I spent around 200 on a suit, 50 on a blouse, and almost $100 on a new pair of shoes. For a grand total of $350.

I should clarify, I bought a new suit jacket with pants AND a skirt (so thats like 2 suits) grand total of 600, a new overcoat 200, new shoes 100, and blouses (2) 100 🙂 You are NOT poorly dressed! 😉

A program director once wanred us not to show up in a nicer suit than the program director has...just something to think about.

I have already bought my tickets, paid for rooms, etc.... However, by the time I add in miscellaneous expences, I imagine that my tab will be ~ $2500.00.

As for clothing, I really DO NOT think that anyone would be overlooked for dressing too nicely -- if so, how would some of the nerdy-professor-types ever fill their spots? I also think that, as long as you look professional, no PD will rank you lower based solely on you appearance; if they do rank based on appearances, I would not want to work for them!

Well, I guess I'm going to have to leave all of my bling at home then.

I HIGHLY doubt this would affect your chances on gaining admission to a program - and I would "NOT" want to work under someone THAT insecure - <period>
