I think there's a substantial degree of truth to standing out in a professional way. Almost every male at an interview wears a black suit - if you wore a charcoal gray suit that stands out against the field, you are visually more likely to stand out at the end of an interview day. This stuff does matter a little bit.
I heavily disagree that looking like the next person as a robot is ideal, and I've always thought it was strange that every single person worse black suits with a conservative color. You aren't going to a funeral, you're having a professional interview. Don't wear pink or orange. It's perfectly acceptable to stand out with brown, navy, or sharp gray suits and a standout tie.
