Hi everyone! I'm trying to schedule a family vacation for next December (around Christmas), and I'm wondering when is the earliest I could safely plan to be out of the country (i.e. the closest to Christmas I could expect interview dates to be). Does anyone who went through the whole interview process last year have any insight?

My last interview in December I think was around Dec.17 (?) so to be on the safe side I think I would schedule a vacation a little after that. Perhaps others had interviews after that date -- but I remember that the bulk of my and many others' interviews were in the first week and a half of the month (Dec.1 - Dec.11).

My last ophtho interview was 12/17. From my own experience and what people before me have said is that things typically wind down by the middle of December. The bulk of your interviews will take place in November and the first few weeks of December. If you're lucky, you can knock off some prelim interviews during that time. If not, those typically take place in January.

So it sounds like if I took a vacation from Dec 20-27th I wouldn't be cutting into my interview time?

Probably not! However, some programs do have interview days that are pretty late (I had one ophtho interview scheduled as late as jan 10th, however my second to last one was dec 19th). Also, keep in mind that those first few weeks in december are a very hectic time for interviewing. You'll probably have several interviews scheduled the week before you leave (most of which will require travelling), so take that into consideration.
 
My last interview was 12/16. Many programs do their last interview that week before Christmas. You should be safe. However, you might have some TY interviews after Christmas, but I think most take the time off between Christmas and New Years. Also, most programs will have multiple dates to choose from too.
