so I know most interviews start in october, but how much of an advantage is it to interview in october instead of november? is there a significant difference? (also, when do you have to be complete to be able to interview in october?) i'm considering taking a job that would prevent me from attending interviews until november...🙁

some schools offer acceptances on/after OCT 15th. I would focus on the quality of secondaries and then get to handing them/LOR/MCAT in as soon as possible.

While getting a job is important and a great learning experience, the amount of money you can save from an early acceptance >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the money you would make from this job.

you will have to call in sick and stuff 🙂

i'm definitely going to try to go complete as soon as possible, but i was wondering if it made a big difference if i scheduled my interviews for november instead of october? i'm assuming yes?

No it doesnt matter if you interview in November. Medschools offer acceptance once a month. October is the usually the first month for acceptance so if you interview in November you can be in the second or third round of acceptance depending on if you interview in the first two weeks of the month or the last two.

so is there a significant advantage to interview in october/be considered in the first round?

I dont think there is. At my school (UASOM) acceptances work kinda like this.

You get an objective score (MCAT/GPA) and an subjective score after your interview where adcoms takes everything else in consideration. Let say the max score for an applicant combine is 20 points (10pt for objective 10pt for subjective)
If the cut off score for acceptance is an 18 out 20. Anyone with a score 18 or above will get an acceptance anyone below will get waitlisted but it you are below the minimum score for consideration you will get rejected.

With that said, early in the interview round the bar is set high and lowered as interviews go on. Maybe by the third/fourth round the acceptance cut will 16.

EDIT: This is why it doesnt matter if you interview anytime during the first few month of the interviewing cycle. If you dont meet the cut off score you wont be acceptance no matter what.

In the begin the cut off is high and few people are offered acceptance because of this. But as time goes on the cut off score is lower and more people are offered acceptances so you shouldnt be too late in going on interviews.

With some schools you'll have an advantage with an earlier interview and with some schools it won't make a difference.

that's interesting.. i would have thought that standards would get progressively higher?

also, is it feasible for me to attend most of my interviews over the span of one month?

You can. I tried that but it was hard missing all those days out of classes. My professors werent that understanding. I did it mainly because I didnt want to worried about interviews and final at the same time.

Standards could get higher as time goes on at other medschool but I dont see how that would work.

It is nice to have an offer in October & be able to relax so that is an advantage but otherwise, no real advantage. If anything, the interviewers are a little more experienced by November over the Sept-Oct interviews.

It is not feasible to attend most of the interviews over the span of a month. You'll get invitations when you get them and the school will give you one date or a choice of a couple of dates over the next 3-5 weeks. You might have an interview in Sept, one in Oct, 2 in Nov, 1 in Dec... and even some in the new year. Or you may have no interviews until February.

LizzyM, thanks for your help! the thing is, i was going to intern abroad this fall, and now i'm wondering if maybe i shouldn't even go at all..

You can send messages to all your schools letting them know when you'll be available for interviews. There are a few schools (NYU?) that finish interview season in December but most continue on into the new year.
