Hi everyone

I think I can only afford to go to Florida once. Both schools don't have interview dates open that I can change and make them both work in one trip. So I think I have to decide on one. Which one would you choose? I really don't know about PBL. Although I think I would like it, never had it so how would I really know? Saving all that tuition fee sounds awfully nice, but I don't like the idea of having to travel all over during the clinical years. But saving all that money does sound nice.

Any advice?

Look at the one with lower admissions stats but highest interviewee acceptance rate.

why? isn't that Lecome? I have 6 ii so far so i am not THAT worried about not getting in somewhere...

You might want to reassess what you're willing to spend... if you had two more interviews (in addition to those you already have) in two different locations, would you be choosing between the two? Is it more expensive to fly to state A twice than state A once and state B once?

Edit: I mean this assuming that both schools are very high on your list. If they aren't, given the itnerview you already have, then pick one, but don't schedule any more interviews. It wouldn't make sense.

Call them both and tell them your situation. See if one can make an exception and fit you in. It happens between AZCOM and ATSU-SOMA all the time and they get it to work out

well Lecome is willing to accommodate but Nova is completely booked till Feb

And personally, I heard many good things about both schools so i don't know how to decide... I still have Five schools I am expecting to hear back from. Three from east coast andtwo local.

Go with the one whose name you know how to spell correctly.

I am in the exact same situation. I have LECOM interview in Sept. and NOVA in November. If I don't get into any of the schools I am interviewing with before November, then I will definitely go to Florida twice. But if I get in somewhere else, then my finances would probably make me withdraw from every where. Trust me, I really, really want to go to every interview I have been invited for to check out what each school has to offer, but thats just not a realistic option.

I'm not trying to be ostentatious but I just find it incredibly annoying that you don't even know how to spell the name of the school that you applied to. I thought it was a typo in the beginning and then you just kept writing it; that aside, all the books I read all say the same thing: until you have an acceptance attend all of the interviews that you are given. Find a way to make it to both of them (it's a sacrifice that will be worth it in the end) because they are really different and I didn't realize what PBL actually was until I was there. Sitting in on a PBL session truly clarifies things, and I wasn't aware of all of the opportunities at NOVA until I went there. Good luck and be excited because not everyone has the options that you do.👍

don't apologize. Its the internet where people get offended over everything and anything. 🙂

Well, I for one wasn't offended, rather a bit irked. Regardless, there's no reason to apologize, but your humility on the internet is pretty awesome. Usually people become these huge d*cks on the internet.

I now have a huge respect for both schools and I have spent myriad of hours researching them, as well. For someone to ask for advice without even having the knowledge of the correct spelling of the schools is a bit irritating. Anyways, that is just my peace but I wasn't trying to reprimand anyone; I just wanted to express myself since this is a public forum.

I was actually making fun of my friend's university on FB and happen to misspell a word. I felt like such an idiot!

It was only one letter extra and you guys are burnin him at the stake. RUTHLESS :boom:

It would be different if it was like LEKUM, or LECOOME, or RECOM (sorry my azn bros).

if i had to choose between lecom-b and nova for an interview id go with nova. Why? Because lecoms acceptance rate WITH WL is only 40% post interview. Not counting WL, even lower. I heard novas is a lot higher. And I think lecom-b actually has higher stats than nova.

what do you mean by higher stats?

higher admission statistics. Lecom-b is at around 28 mcat 3.53 gpa 3.39 science

You obviously don't really like LECOM-B or Nova, so why not attend neither and save the money for a school you actually care a lot about?

If memory serves, this zoner guy has a 4.0/30 so it really doesn't matter.

Edit: Here's his WAMC.

So I have been spending the past 3-4 years getting ready to go to med school (MD) and this past application cycle unfortunately I wasn't accepted to any med school. Applied to about 25, got one interview but ultimately, they ended up rejecting me.

mcat 30
gpa 3.7
science gpa 4.0
age 36
clinical volunteer experience ~100
community service 1 year
research 1.5 years with a couple presentations and currently working on publishing.
lots of random and varied work experiences (non medically related)I am applying to all California schools (again) except for Loyola and Stanford. Also going to be applying to handful of DO school around the coastal areas of the country. But I need about 4 more schools to apply to that I have a decent chance of getting in. Thank you

actually, i really do like Nova, just that i don't really know much about LECOM's PBL. I think being in Florida would rock. So is it really true that you have to travel all over during the clinical years at Lecom?

I'll try to be as unbiased as possible here, since I was accepted to both but go to Nova now. What kind of learning style do you think will work best for you? Self-learning or classroom learning with self-review after class?

I don't know about LECOM-B's PBL specifically, but I assume all PBL is the basically the same. My girlfriend had some PBL at her school and it was a small-group of medical students with a facilitator (faculty member) sitting around and discussing multiple cases. Students were required to prepare before coming to class and by prepare I mean look up everything about the case and be prepared to present, discuss their suggested treatment and any relevant clinical studies or related cases that they found. This was during M1, so I'd imagine M2 PBL is even more detailed and rigorous considering the M1s don't really know all that much. Think of it like a giant research project.

If you like Nova and are on the fence about LECOM-B, I suggest you attend the Nova interview.

Hey girl...sounds to me like you know you like NOVA, but not sure about LECOM. I'd say that'd be enough for me to choose NOVA

muhahah, hey girlfriend,,,,

thanks everyone for your kind suggestion,,, I chose Nova, but I just hope I don't regret it considering all the good things I heard about the quality of the school at LECOM.

I went to vist ATSU-SOMA (mispelling? sorry) and I think they do PBL ther eas well... am i right?

Yes. This was actually a huge turn off for me. Some people have it worse than others, but from the students I talked to, you do quite a bit of moving. Some people see this as a plus, but I'd rather have the opportunity to settle down somewhere. I feel like this is where LECOM-B fails. Many others across SDN have expressed the same sentiment. Nonetheless, I really liked the campus and location of the school. Just wasn't for me.

I may be wrong but I think only LECOM-Erie, LECOM-B and Seton Hill have PBL curriculum

haha...now we're BFF

About SOMA, they have a totally different system actually. I happen to really like it...but its based on what they call clinical presentations. You basically study how different diseases present themselves and learn the basic science in that context. You also only have one year of pure didactics and then years 2-4 are in a clinical setting (CHC) and your classes are small group and independent study based. Not a bad system...

PBL is called different things at different schools, but the "case-based" style of learning is increasingly being incorporated into the curriculum at more and more schools to integrate the basic and clinical sciences. I believe what zoner was trying to say is that ATSU-SOMA has a portion of their curriculum devoted to this style of learning, not that their curriculum is solely PBL, as it is at the LECOMs (whether it is a pathway or the only pathway, like at LECOM-B).

I wish I would have seen this thread earlier.
First of all to señor ostentatious who was nitpicking spelling instead of just gently correcting, you misspelled "piece" earlier. Said peace instead. Yeah, now I'm being nitpicky. Lol

OP, there have been good points made here. If you already know you would like NOVA go there, they do have better chances of accepting people. I think the issue is if NOVA can only interview in February that will be fairly late in the game and that may reduce your chances. Then again, maybe you don't have money to do both interviews right now, but could you set both interview dates, buy travel for the earlier one, and then work and save money and pay for the later interview when the time gets nearer? That way, if you get into the earlier one and don't want to do the later one you can just cancel with no out of pocket expenses because you havent bought travel yet.
If the interviews were both earlier in the semester I would say sell an organ and go to both, but with one being later you get some leeway to juggle things financially.

Ok ok, point well taken. In my defense everything I write is on my
iPhone and it's WAY easier to type NOVA than it is to try to type NSI-XOM, I mean MSU-VOM, sorry, I meant to type NSU-BON, oh screw it.

It's all good, bro. No hard feelings?

I get irked when I see NOVA. What do the O-V-A stand for in NOVA? Nothing.

NOVA: Nova Southeastern University of Vague Accreditation.

Wait, Nova's already booked for interviews until Feb? I'm not even verified yet!

As of now, they don't have any dates open until next year. Doesn't mean that they won't add new dates though.

I'm hoping they will add an extra day a week...I am pulling so bad for my bf to get a interview there...can you imagine...moving to FL...having the beach and being med students at the same school? Sound like paradise to me.

But the reality is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBib7EUvh_U

You know it's true love when you look forward to screaming at each other. LOL

Psh, med school is all rainbows and unicorns.

Yeah, you really need to decide if you want to do PBL. It is very different. I loved it, but it was a big adjustment not having much structure and huge volumes of material. LECOM is cheaper. I am not sure why you keep spelling it lecome?

We've moved past this already.

Big news, new DO school somewhere in the South...not yet officially announced. The name is still being fine tuned, but I have it on good authority that they will be calling it:

NOVA-Lecome..
.

Everyone will love it.
