Hello guys, I went for an inyerview at my top choice program. I am an fmg and the program had mostly amg..I was interviewed by two members of the faculty which went well..Now I am just wondering what are the criteria used to make the ultimate decision. I met the director and chairman only in a group setting for a brief time only...I did ask some q to everyone about the program..but I honestly can't decide if I have any chance at all...Is this normal or am I missing something here? are there any green signals or red flags that indicate our chances?

I'll tell you what I know about my program-it's probably similar elsewhere... The overall ranking process here is based on many factors, the more important ones include grade, interviews, and recommendations from peds faculty and your chair, and also other experiences including research. I think for most programs Step I/II scores are less important-even the top programs I think use them more for screening. These are numerically combined (so they say 🙂) and that list is the rank list. I do find it hard to believe that there isn't some PD/Chair shuffling based on knowing people, but that's their story and they are sticking to it 🙄.

At this point you are unlikely to get green flags unless you are already known to the program (from being a med student there or doing an away rotation), or if you are an amazing candidate, because there will be many more applicants to come. You are unlikely to get a red flag unless something really went bad in the interview, or they found out you lied on your app. It may be tougher as an FMG in an AMG heavy program, but many peds programs are looking more for smart people who will add something to the program, not top school grads. Our programs is mostly AMGs, but each year we take 1-2 FMG or DO students (and we tend not to go too far down the rank list so it's not that they were second choices). I'd send a letter to the PD expressing your interest in the program and why you like it, and be hopeful!

Good luck!
