Hi, everyone. Since we are all starting the interview trail soon. I wanted to start a thread about our interview experiences. For those interested in sharing their experience please post the:

1. Name of the program
2. # of interviews that day (indicate if one to one or panel interview)
3. a place you would recommend visiting during the stay
4. any recommendations for those interviewing in that program
5. overall impression of the program

Don't know if this thread will take off but would be fun to see. Feel free to make changes.

Good luck everyone!!! Hope interview offers keep coming for all of us.

Alright, I'm game. My frist interview was on Wednesday.

1. Cook Co./Stroger
2. 3 interviews (one on one... "round robin")
3. I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Harrison (1.7 miles away, which I just walked to the interview), but there is a Marriot that is much closer (also on Harrison).
4. Recommend: do research on the premise of a county hospital (funding, etc) and be prepared to talk about why you would like to work with this underserved population and why you'd be good at it.
5. Overall impression: They really went out of there way to make the students comfortable and the overall tone of the day was jovial 🙂 .
👍

1. UTSW-Dallas
2. 6 (one-on-one; 20 min. each)
3. ???????
4. This interview was my first interview and it was a very relaxed interview. Just be yourself. The faculty are very interested in selling you their program instead of turning you off to it by pimping you or asking you "difficult" questions.
5. Surgical numbers are great; large program with 8 residents (= less call!!)residents/fellows are happy; good comaraderie between residents and excellent faculty-resident interactions; only ophtho program in Dallas so no competition for numbers

1. University of Rochester
2. 6 with faculty, 1 q&a session with resident (one-on-one; 25 min. each)
3. I stayed with family in Buffalo. Most candidates stayed at the Strathallan near downtown Rochester. Informal dinner with residents was here after interview day - seemed nice from the outside.
4. Also my first interview - the half-day session was well organized. Overall the interviews were very relaxed. Make sure you know the leading causes of blindness, be prepared to discuss any research you were involved with and why you're interested in ophthalmology. They will probably try to figure out if you'd be willing to live in Rochester.
5. Everyone was extremely friendly. The program has grown a lot since the new chair came from USC-Doheny in 2001. Beautiful new clinical space opened a year ago. Two floors of research labs will be built in the near future. Most of the faculty are young and enthusiastic - at least 3 more faculty will be hired in the next year. Surgery numbers are moderate, but have increased recently due to changes in residency program. They also plan to offer more fellowships in the future. The city of Rochester apparently has more to offer culturally than you'd think. If you don't mind living with lake-effect snow, the cost of living is very reasonable. Also no traffic jams - you can buy a nice house within a 15 min. commute of Strong Memorial Hosp. (some people even bike to work.)

1. UW- Madison
2. Four one-one interviews, 20 mins a piece.
3. Yes! Best to stay over a SAT and/or FRI night night, lots of things going on down-town (at least when I visitied). Very nice lively down-town and campus area. Won't really have much to do itf you stay longer.
4. They give you so much information at the beginning of the day, that its hard to think of good questions....so think about them ahead of time.
5. Nice facilities, pleasent atmosphere, very friendly residents, seemed happy.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all for posting. Any more people interested in sharing their experiences? Good luck to you all and see you in the interview trail.

1. Texas Tech
2. Four one-one interviews, 30 mins a piece. Interview with chairman and PD
3. Lubbock Inn is okay. Has a business center with email access, which is a must on the interview trail
4. Some ?s asked: Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? Whats the most difficult time you have had to go through in your life and how did you deal with problem? They will ask you what drew you to Lubbock so have an answer prepared.
5. New ophtho clinic opening in June 2006, president of the University Medical Center is an ophthalmologist, so funding is there, pleasent atmosphere, very friendly residents, high retina primary cases such as core vitrectomies, very solid comprehensive program, residents raved about the program. Good luck.

Hope this helps.

Doodpac,

Quick question for you. What time did the interview day end? Thanks.
