Just put me out of my misery! Don't schools have the decency to send me a rejection instead of leading me on to believe I may still have a chance for an interview!

Such insane cruelty should be illegal. I'm like their "just in case all else fails" applicant, just can't let go. I feel used. 🙁

Anyone else frustrated with these "holds" pre-interview?🙄

No. With my luck I just don't get interviews at the schools I really want to go to. Or I get waitlisted at the schools that after I interview at I'd like to attend which just means more waiting.

The frustrating thing about my holds are that they are from my state schools (SUNY upstate and downstate).

Though not officially told on hold, I think my app is on hold at:

Northwestern
Univ of Virginia
Maybe even Dartmouth

These are schools that have been sending out interview offers for a while, and I was completed at these schools on 8/4 or 8/12. Called them up a few time. "Sir, your app is still under review"...

same here for Northwestern, UVa and Dartmouth, probably several more...called up NW and told me that the dean has not made the decision on my application yet...so thats practically "on hold" I supposed.

Yea, of my 3 holds, 2 are from lower tier schools that aren't really up there on my list. The 3 interviews, however, are from higher tier schools that I would be ecstatic to be accepted to. I don't know what to think of this. I guess I'm excited to have interviews, but it hurts my confidence to know the lower schools aren't even sure about me.

By the way, most people I know with pre-interview holds got the interview around march. Anyone know of a case when the hold was taken off earlier? (aka winter?)

Yo, me too. This "on hold for interview" business is driving me nuts. I got 3 interviews and 2 holds...

chapinsita... if you don't mind me asking, what schools put u on hold for interviews?

Maybe some other people could add their experience with GW to this thread, but it seems to me that everyone gets that yellow postcard that says "hold" after the application becomes complete. I got that postcard and then a day later got an letter about interviewing... maybe being on hold at GW is just their way of saying "we have your application" and not really so much that "you need to be reevaluated?" Anybody else know about this?

That's a comforting thought. The postcard though, stated: "Your file has been reviewed and placed on hold. In the event that your status changes we will contact you immediately." Is this what you got?

Yup, the very same. I thought it was kind of weird that the postcard and interview invite came a day apart... but then again, to repeat myself, maybe everyone gets that postcard regardless. ??? This whole application process is baffling and I should really give up trying to analyze it

I don't think that GW sends everyone that postcard. I got an interview invitation almost the same day I got a postcard saying my application was complete.

Hi, I got a GW interview without receiving any type of notification that my file was complete.

Maybe it was lost in the mail.........

My file has been complete at UCI since 8/20 and when I called they claimed my file still hasn't been reviewed by the adcom yet. This waiting process is absolutely inhumane.

Hm, I haven't even gotten a secondary from GW. I didn't even think they screened secondaries. I've gotten 3 interviews from "better" schools, so even if they did screen I figured I would at least get the secondary! Perhaps I should call....

GW doesn't screen before sending out secondaries. They just send you a link by email. You should call and find out what the deal is.

Also, I received a postcard saying my file was complete, and then I received an interview invite. I think the "hold" postcard must be different.

Well, if you just think ur on hold and haven't heard anything from a school for a while, i guess it might not hurt to call them

i actually called Einstein yesterday and it seems one of the committee members was reviewing it and the admissions office never got it back from him. I guess my phone call reminded them i still existed. anyway, got an invite today 🙂

haha damn.....im like in the same boat with you.

but i really do think they just prioritize the files from favorable to non favorable for the apps that come in during a set period of time and then review in that order and not in the order we turn it in........even though we worked hard to make sure we got this **** in early.

but yeah.......thats just my guess.

Just got another hold from Albany. I wish these schools would flat out reject me instead of making me wait a few months before they reject me.

I think I don't care about Dartmouth and UVA anymore, I just got my acceptance to Vanderbilt today. However, I still really like Northwestern's campus and hoping to get an interview there sometime soon.

But, i have several interviews. oh well, look at the + 3 interview is good.

goly, be glad NW is processing your application. they seem to be ha ving horrendous difficulties doing that for me... Unfortunately, NWU is a good school, and very much local, so I WANT it.

Are you guys sure about UCI? I had my invitation in less than 3 weeks. In fact, it took longer to get the secondary request from UCI than the interview invitation. I would check with them again. I hope they didn't lose your files! I was very impressed how fast UCSD and UCI (almost as fast as Duke) are about updating their status page and sending out interview requests.

I think i'm also on hold at UCD and Harvard....I have heard nothing from these schools and I have been completed for more than 6 weeks at these schools now.

On a serious note: I'm always happy to support one of Chap's threads... I'm on pre-interview hold at UCSD and UCSF, and haven't been reviewed at UCI. I still have hope 🙂

For those of you who were put on the hold list at UCSD, I emailed them and tried to work in an interview, but just got this email from them:

"The Admissions Committee will be making final decisions regarding the applicants on 'Hold' in the next few weeks. If selected for interview, we will try to accommodate your request."

It's crunch time, folks. 🙄

I hope they didnt use my secondary as TP already.

Yea, I just got off of the on hold list at UCSD at couple of weeks ago. I submitted my secondary in july and was on hold from october until right before christmas break. So there's hope, they're starting to fudge the hold list.

Dude, that's much better than being put on hold at UCI. I dun think they even look at the hold people until March when they're through with the "highly qualified" people.

yes, the waiting sucks...even more so for me than most of you. at least most of you have had a couple of interviews...I've had zero so far...I'm still waiting on 13 schools for something. (I've had 3 rejections)

although, yeah, my situation is different than most everyone with my whole serious illness situation that happened in Sept. (look around for the story on my Lemierre's Syndrome, it's told in SDN a couple of times) that put me on a medical hold for a couple of months, but it still sucks. I want some interviews! I want someone to want me too. I'm just hoping what happened to me didn't hurt me too much.

What is an interview hold? I have never received this notice.

I just wanted to pop in and comiserate.

On hold from UCI and GW, prolly on hold at UCLA, absolutely no word from AE or UCD. One interview at U of Hawaii.

I am really torn. Is it more humane of schools to not post our status? I mean, I think that most of us here are probably Type-A anyhow, and would be going crazy over this stuff whether we had word or not.

I propose a new system: instead of posting the status of our apps, they should post our percentagewise chance of getting in. The default would be the percentage of acceptances versus applicants, and it would improve for each stage you proceed in the process. Eventually, you might get to a 25% chance at the interview stage! Of course, if they want you to be realistic, they could always bump that up or down based on your credentials.
