Due to Corona my upcoming interview is going to be online. The problem is right now my entire family is at home with me. I don't trust them to be quiet, and I'm afraid they might do something to embarrass me during the interview. For example. my brother is a gamer who yells constantly. Asking them not to would not help nor do I have any room in my house that's "closed off".

Usually I would rent out a library room, but they're closed too 🙁. The only safe space is my car. There I wouldn't be worried about them and could properly focus on my interview. However, I understand how unprofessional that would look, but I really have no other options. Would the school be understanding if I briefly explained it at the beginning?

Yep. Just a one liner, “you’ll notice I’m in my car as my whole family is ckose quarters right now and I really wanted to make sure I could give you my undivided attention. I’m excited about talking to you and wanted to make the most of our time together”

Why does this sound like something out of a bad date movie....

These are very different and difficult times. I would cut you a lot of slack.

Can't speak for how adcoms would view it, but they are humans and surely understand these are weird times.

Have you considered renting a hotel room? Obviously $100+ is a lot to shell out for this, but it might be the most comfortable solution for you. Just being able to sit at a desk, have your notes in front of you, not be balancing a laptop...

I like this idea. Had there not been COVID19, you would have spent on this anyways plus flight, food, and transport. Similarly, a nice AirBnb might be a cheaper alternative, preferably a place all to yourself but a quiet, private room might work too (ask your host).

Only problem I have with this is I'm concerned about safety. My town had a corona outbreak and I don't really trust their cleaning procedures.

Funny thing is I actually wouldn't have because this school is in my state. So in fact I'll be shelling more money than I would have

I stand corrected. I still like the idea for others. I imagine rates are pretty low right now too.

If sanitation is a concern, I think you could easily bring a wipe and clean the desk and chair since that's all you'll be using.

That's good to hear. Im thinking of hanging a tarp just to make it less obvious. Should I still mention it then?

I think a tarp would be pretty weird. A quick word at the beginning as @sb247 suggested should be good.

Idk I tested it out today and felt like the tarp gave a more simpler background and helped block light from behind me.

Can you at least rent a limousine then sit in the backseat so it looks classy like in the movies?
