I am from a low-tier program with a decent step 1 (260+), 2-3 papers in submission. I want to schedule a research away at a program I will be likely to receive an interview from. I know a lot of programs will not consider someone for an interview on the basis of their medical school alone. Any suggestions on where to apply?

Henry Ford might be a good place since they don't have their own med school (which will make it easier to stand out on an away). It's an awesome and often overlooked program, so I'd check it out if I were you.

Wow, a 260+ and 2-3 papers and you still have to overcome the fact that your school isn't top 25? scary for all us of at the "normal medical schools"

I think the avg derm applicant has a 245 on Step 1, AOA, and about 5 publications and comes from an above-average school. So yeah, the OP's 260 is good, but the publications and school are not so good. Also, we don't know if the OP is AOA.

I think some of that is hyperbole. I've seen the publications about average pubs and school rankings for Derm residency applicants. I mean first, the publications listed can be anything (case reports, presentations at conferences), they don't differentiate those from say a JID publication. So, to say every Derm applicant has 5 publications (all of significant worth) on avg is a bit of a stretch. Maybe they have mixes of say 2 case reports, 2 presentations, and their name on 1 clinical paper etc.

And what do you mean by above average schools? The research put out on this subject determines top schools by being one of the top "40 NIH funded institutions" not the US World News rankings. Well, that doesn't always correspond to what everyone deams a "top school". Perfect example, University Rochester, awesome school, Top 40 NIH funding, but often unheard of or overlooked by many (do think a school like this is looked "down upon"?)

When we talk publications, they are in any field right? From what I understand, they may not specifically be Derm publications.

To tennisballs, dermgrad2011, and futuredoc4: thank you for the posts.

Dermgrad2011 brings up a few good points. It is unlikely that I will be AOA and I do not have 5 pubs. (Although I do have all honors minus one clerkship). In addition, the pubs I do have are in derm..i think this will help some. I believe the 5-7 pub average is a combo of abstracts, presentations, papers, etc. These are not necessarily in derm.

But these are just numbers. While the numbers may get me an interview at 5-15 programs, ultimately it comes down to the interview and if they like your personality or not.
