Dear SDN,

I just got an interview invite and I couldn't be more excited!!!!
I wanted to ask you guys (this may be a stupid question), is this indicative of them being happy with me on paper? As in, as long as I do well in this interview, I should have a shot?

Congratulations!! Very exciting. Yes, it means you're academically qualified to handle the curriculum. However, don't get comfortable until you're accepted. This is your golden ticket, just knock your interview out of the park

If you get an II, that means you meet the requirements academically for admission. Now, with that said, that isn't to say a good interview guarantees acceptance; they will still look at your MCAT, GPA, etc when determining whether or not to offer you an acceptance in addition to interview notes. The main idea of this whole process is to control what you can. At this point, your scores are what they are, so kill the interview to give yourself the best shot!

They do MMI at this school. I've done quite a bit of research on this interview method and definitely understand what it's about but I'm getting more and more nervous. I've been looking at a bunch of sample MMI questions just to get a feel as to how this will go. I can articulate a good response along with supporting ideas for most of the scenarios that I've read through; I just fear that I'll be too nervous to formulate a strong response.

Is this at Ole Miss? If so, and you do well, then you have a very good chance.

everyone will be at least a little nervous on interview day, you are not alone. I found MMI's to be fun personally. Best preparation is to know basics of ethics and like you have been doing, practice a couple questions timed. Other than that, be confident and go in with an open mind.

Also, yes getting an interview means they can see you as a potential student at that school. good luck!

I've been curious as to how to approach answering these scenarios. Usually it involves a decision where you can either do X or Y. The way I've been answering these is with utter honesty as to how I feel about the given circumstance and how I would defend my decision. Is that how it's meant to be approached or am I to express validity on both sides and argue in defense of either decision?

No, I'm not. But, I know that if you're instate and you've got an II to Ole Miss,, then you have a pretty good chance of acceptance. What are your stats? do you know how many Ole Miss interviews?

The only statistics I could find (from their site) is that in 2012 they had 368 applications, sent out 225 interview invites and accepted 157 for a class of 135 (I don't really know how that works, why would they accept 157 if they've only got 135 seats? I'm sure they're anticipating some going to other schools but what if all 157 ended up wanting to attend here?)

It is definitely a good step forward but all schools are different. some schools waitlist a large chunk of the students they interview while some schools accept a large chunk of students they interview. Just make sure you dress professionally and prepare before the interview and all you can do is your best

Thats because they dont accept 157 at once. They're accept some number under 135, then slowly accept more until the number of people who committed reaches their desired class size, in this case 135.

They use models that tell them how many to accept to get roughly the number they need. They may not have accepted 157 at one time, that number may be the total number AFTER going to the WL in the spring/summer.

the school may have accepted 140 by March. If all 140 had tried to enroll, and they only have 135 seats, then they might have offered a scholarship to those willing to delay enrollment for a year. Schools have these things figured out. Their models are pretty accurate, and they have solutions for when the models error.

I am not a URM. I took the MCAT the last date of the old one. I knew my score was not competitive and so I applied to the SMP offered at my alma mater, William Carey University, and got accepted. I did quite well my first term (and am still doing well) and was able to get those transcripts to UMMC before my application was reviewed. I don't like speculating as to what it was that got me the interview but I do believe that it had to do with my performance in this special master's program.
