Interview invites update

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Speaking of TIRR, I was unable to a copy of my birth certificate and did not bring my most current passport (I have an older copy). Their e-mail did state I had to bring two forms of identification. Hopefully they will at least let me interview tomorrow morning.

I called them. You can use your school ID for the second ID requirement.

Nice call. I'll sleep much better tonight! 👍

I've only heard from 2 Cali programs -- an invite to UCI and a rejection from Loma Linda. Still haven't heard from UCLA, UCDavis or Stanford, but I'm guessing I probably won't hear from them seeing my LOR fiasco.

Here's my list thus far: Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPitt, NYU, Temple, Emory, UC Irvine, Baylor (Houston)...

Rejection from Univ of Washington and Loma Linda.
Still haven't heard from UNC, Kessler, RIC, Columbia/Cornell, Jefferson, UPenn

Applied to 18 programs total...only got interviews for 7...is that even enough?
I'm really worried. My LOR ordeal really screwed me over. Still no invites for TY either (applied to only 4). :scared:

Hey Fooman,

I know things look a little rough, but you've heard from some great programs, so you must have some good stuff on your application. Hang in there, keep fighting for that LOR and good luck to you. I will certainly be sending good vibes your way!! 🙂

Thanks parmed...I'm trying to look on the bright side. Maybe one of the programs that I'm interviewing at will turn out to be the best fit for me. Hopefully I'll get my physiatrist letter soon or else it's going to suck having to explain why I don't have one.

Since my thread about my LOR problem, I have contacted 2 other physiatrists. One of them declined to write it because I only spent 5 days (Mon-Fri) with her. This is after I presented a case, helped with admissions and discussed about certain PM&R topics, plus we got along well...so I'm thinking it's more of the deadline issue that she can't meet. Afterall, I also spent 5 days with other attendings as I rotated through each specialty for 1 week. I'm still waiting to hear from the other.

So far, it's been a bad year....I was one of the unlucky people who took the COMLEX in September and got screwed over by the NBOME server crash and now have to retake the COMLEX exam again. Unfortunately, it won't be until January which means I won't be able to submit my score like I had intended to. Yet another thing I'll have to explain on interview.

invite from Thomas Jefferson today...thank god. I was getting worried.

Still waiting for Columbia and for those of you who are in the same boat I called the program and Trish (the coordinator) said that they are still reviewing applications. So no news is good news.

Continued luck to everyone!

UC-Davis as well. Was beginning to feel a drought coming on.

Baylor/UT-Houston interview went great and I got to meet a few SDNers at the same time. Can't wait till my next interview!

Invite from UCLA/VA by email yesterday.

so i got an invite from SUNY downstate...but they didnt tell me the dates, instead they told me about the fact they are on probation and if i was still interested, let them know...

anyone know why they are on probation??

You have to call one of those two ladies for the dates. They're obligated to tell you they're on probation, and most of the matters for which they were originally put on probation have been resolved with the exception of board pass rates. I met a couple of folks on the interview trail who were in med school at Downstate and they told me the same story as well. But, seeing as all our sources are probably one and the same, maybe one of the current residents at Downstate can provide us with more insight.

I assume as Thanksgiving is just 'round the corner this marks the unofficial end of the interview season? Am I right?

Just sent emails to cancel my interviews at the following programs:

scheduled in December: Temple, Georgetown, Kessler, Baylor, and Mayo

scheduled in January: Michigan and Emory

Hope this helps anyone here that may be on a wait list. :luck:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

Actually, I will just be getting most of my interviews started after Thanksgiving, so December should be the busiest interview season for me. I interviewed at Baylor last week and it seemed like at the most, a few people had done 1-2 interviews. Maybe you are referring to the unofficial end of sending out interview invitations?

As a side note, I am trying to figure out the best way to travel to Pittsburgh from either Boston or Philadelphia. Does anyone have specific advice regarding driving out or flying with a certain airline? Without a day in-between for travel, would I probably have to fly?

Invites from Temple PM&R and Maryland General Prelim. (thanks to people who took the time to cancel interviews -- it does make a difference to other applicants who are waitlisted!) 🙂 👍 :luck:

21 PM&R so far:
Cleveland, Ohio
Rochester, NY
Johns Hopkins, MD
UCLA
UCI
Charlotte Rehab
Univ. of Alabama
Buffalo, NY
Virginia
Columbia Cornell

Univ. of NY Stony Brook
Univ of Pitts
Toledo, Ohio
Univ of Cincinatti
Tufts
Baylor, Dallas, TX
Nassau
Arkansas
East Carolina
Stanford

Temple

7 TY/Prelim IM:
Harbor
Flushing
Cooperstown
Cambridge
Orlando, Florida
Alameda
St. Vincent, MA

In retrospect, I should've applied to less PM&R and more TY/Prelim IM.

If you're referring to interview invites, I'm definitely not getting them at the rate I was before, but I've had invites trickling into my ERAS mailbox last week and this week (probably 2ndary to other people cancelling their interviews).

6 down (done with the Nov. ones), 6 next month, and 2 in January. I haven't heard back from 2 yet (so I'm assuming they're rejections 🙁 ), I got the "thanks but no thanks" from Baylor-Dallas, and am having scheduling issues with one program 🙄 .

PS: I'll post on scutwork once I find all the small pieces of paper on which I jotted notes.

From Philadelphia both Southwest and US Air fly numerous times daily - price shave dropped steeply since Southwest entered the market. It used to cost $600 round trip before to fly. Philadelphia-Pittsburgh is about a 5-6 hour drive.

From Boston to Pittsburgh you can fly direct on US Air or United, or take Southwest from Providence (about 40 miles southwest of Boston) transiting Philadelphia.

I have cancelled interviews, in December, at U of Washington, Cornell, and U of Cincinnati. Good luck everyone.

Wow...you're turning down UCLA and Mayo? I sure wish I had that much confidence! I envy you! Which program are you hoping to match into?

Best of luck to you!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you all!! :luck: 🙂

Wow! Some really qualified people here, cancelling interviews at places like mayo and UW!

Was offered a few interviews this week, probably owing to all the people cancelling. Unfortunately, may not be able to schedule any of them! DOH

Happy thanksgiving folks! 😀

cancelled Baylor-UT, Schwab, UVA, Baylor Dallas, Buffalo, Rochester

Good Luck to Everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving

Gosh this is going to sound like a pre-canned interview answer: I'm looking for a program with broad exposure to different elements of the field with good opportunities for research and fellowship/postdoc opportunities, one that's financially stable - no accreditation issues, and one with cool people who aren't mean/don't suck (I've been spoiled in medical school with being surrounded by mostly-mostly all nice professors and classmates). Outdoorsy activity opportunities in the area a plus (biking, hiking, swimming, camping, +/- surfing), not too concerned about city vs. country as long as not too far from a "real" airport and semi-professional population. Not too much into the name thing as long as it's solid and will allow me to pursue career goals. Why do you ask and where are you looking to match?

Does anyone have suggestions about programs that haven't contacted you yet? I tried emailing these particular schools about a month ago and they gave vague responses such as "we'll contact you as soon as we hear something from the committee." Now that its almost December, is it too forward to call to see what's up?

I don't think so, I mean they haven't invited you yet and it's almost Dec. (and what's the worst outcome - they still won't invite you) and if you show interest they may just invite you. There was one program I really really liked that I hadn't heard from relatively late into the game - I sent them an email, and they sent me an interview a few days later. Try to tell them why specifically you'd be a great asset to/nice fit for them, though, instead of a please, pretty please, with sugar on top... 🙄

Hi all,
Hope you guys had a good Thanksgiving holiday. I posted a thread earlier but haven't heard any responses yet so I thought I'd try here. I have interviews at St. Vincent's, Med Coll of WI, and Uof Minnesota and I was wondering if anybody knows anything about these programs. I heard St. Vincent's hospital is bankrupt, not sure if this is true, and I really haven't heard much about the other 2 programs. Does anyone out there have any insight into theses programs besides what's on scutwork. Also, I read on here that someone left Med Coll of WI, does anyone know why? My finances are getting very low so I need to cancel at least 2 out of the 3 interviews so any help would be appreciated and I'll let you guys know which ones I end up cancelling. HELP! Thanks. 😕

invite from mount sinai today!

(Just as a note ...I hadn't heard from them so yesterday I sent the PD an email -- and today he invited me to interview -- thanks for the advice cyano) 🙂 :luck:

After debating for a bit, I went ahead and emailed a program AGAIN to ask about my interview status and was sent an invitation the next day. I guess it's better to be a nag than miss out. 🙂

for quite some time, I finally got off my a$$ and registered. So, better late than never, here are my invites and rejections (hopefully no more of those....)
Invites
Temple
Indiana
Kessler
Mayo
UW - Seattle
UC - Davis
U Mich - Ann Arbor
THE Ohio State University
UW - Madison
MCoW
RIC
Baylor - Houston
San Antonio

Rejections/Wait List
UVa
Baylor - Dallas
Stanford

Still waiting (probably rejects)
Cornell/columbia
Utah
Wash-U
Spaulding
UCLA
Rush

I've interviewed at a couple so far, stories from these to follow.....

My 2 cents,

I'm a PGY2 at Jefferson and I had to e-mail the secretary and program director a couple of time before I was granted an interview. This occurred at a couple of programs.

Although finding out the program director's pager number and paging him/her directly might be a little much; I don't think there is anything wrong with "bugging" a program you're truly interested in to ask for an interview. It will not hurt you. Be persistent--especially at this stage of the game. I'm sure many MSIVs are cancelling interviews now and opportunities are available.

J-rod

Is anyone cancelling at Stanford in Jan by chance? Has anyone interviewed there yet? Just wondering what to expect.
How about UC Irvine? I just received an offer from them today!

cancelled/declined: Baylor/Dallas, UTSW, Schwab, Marianjoy, UKY, Mayo, UCLA, ECU, Temple, CIR, Sinai-Balt, OSU

Continued luck to y'all!

Since that big storm has come through Chicago and is going to hit the east coast, I hope everyone stays safe, relatively warm, and makes it through the interview trail in one piece. I'm just about finished on my east coast trip (heading back to California after JFK tomorrow morning.. if I can get to the airport and my flight is not delayed), but I met lots of great folks on the trail that I will hopefully see sooner or later.

Still have a few more interviews in January, but now I get to take a break...

Wow, that's a lot of quality declines there cyano. 🙂 Sounds like you're doing really well.

I know what you mean about being tired. I never thought interviewing would be this tiring. Before fourth year, I always thought it'd be great to travel around, see different cities, etc, etc. Now, after having done it and seeing my bank account, I'd love to be in one place. 🙂 At the same time, I don't mean to complain. I feel fortunate to have the interviews I do.

This little blurb probably adds nothing to the forum, but don't have anything pressing as a fourth year. 🙂

Believe it or not, I got a phone call yesterday from Columbia inviting me to interview...although my ego is a tad bruised I'll probably be interviewing there at the end of january --- you never know maybe i'll love it

best of luck everyone!! :luck:

Congratulations parmed about your NYPH interview. I wrote a blurb about it in the interview stories section. Maybe you will like it. One of their seniors is very candid about the program, hope you get to talk to her. She transferred from UVa.

Hey Cyano thanks I hope I run into the same senior

today was an another interesting day -- invite from Boston University -- I don't know if I can do another interview...but we'll see :luck:

Hey parmed,
Same here with the call from Columbia-Cornell. It's a definite trip out there (from southern California) as I notified them awhile ago when I did all my east coast interviews, but I may end up going out there in January as well to see what the program's all about.

Maybe I'll get to try out one of those red-eye Jet Blue flights after all...
