Hello everybody

So I am preparing for interviews but the one thing that I cannot fix is that I swallow a lot (gulp) when i get nervous. I am really good about not showing any other nervous habits, the only thing that I can't hide is developing this lump in my throat! Sometimes I try to talk by just ignoring it but the lump will eventually build up causing me to choke giving away my nervousness!!!

How detrimental is it if you appear nervous during your interview? I feel like I won't be able to hide this swallowing thing. Also does anyone have any tips of getting rid of this bad nervous habit?

I totally empathize with you.

Unfortunately, I think the only thing you can do is practice. Practice with someone you respect (parent, grandparent, boss at work, etc). The idea is to practice being nervous and (more importantly) to practice your answers. They'll get better every time you say them and get feedback.

They expect people to be nervous. Don't worry about having a sweaty hand, lump in your throat, or other mild things. Everyone else feels just the same!

Good luck! 🙂

Everyone will be nervous at the beginning - that's why they tell you to shake hands even if your hands are gross and cold and wet 🙂

I think your downfall will be if you can't get rid of that feeling within 5-10 minutes of starting the interview since at that point you go from normally jittery to nervous by nature.

There's nervous, and then there's NERVOUS. I've seen interviewees babble, blank out in mid sentence, start to answer and then ask "what was the question?", cry, pass gas, stammer, and flush a bright crimson-red.

So, yes, it can be detrimental, and we've rejected people for being too nervous, but not always.

Suggest you talk to your doctor, or go see your school's counselor for tips on dealing with this.

Better yet, take a puiblic speaking, debating or acting course so you can be used to dealing with an audience.

Thanks for the replies they are very helpful!

Its not thay I have a major problem with nervousness (like sweating or shaking), I just can't help this throat thing and I want to come off as really confident but this bad reflex gives it all away.
