Hello,

I'm currently applying to D.O. schools. All of my materials have been submitted, except for my letter of rec from a D.O. The reason for this is that I live in an area with relatively few D.O.s...even my PCP, who is board-certified in holistic medicine, doesn't know any in this area (the only one she knows is across the state! 🙁 ). I've contacted a D.O. through the osteopathic mentoring website who is willing to let me shadow, but I can't begin until next month (because of his schedule, not mine). I do already have a letter in my file from an M.D., however. Does anyone know if the schools will go ahead and review my chances for an interview without the D.O. letter? Should I explain the complication to the school's admissions office directly? Or should I just wait until I get my letter, even though that may take another month? Just curious.... 😕

FYI: I'm applying to NSU, LECOM-FL, PCOM, & UNECOM.

in my opinion...unless the school specifically requires a DO letter.....get whatever letter you have submitted ASAP b/c this is already pretty late in the application cycle....by next month your chances of admission would probably be much lower simply bc of the time.....and I don't think a DO letter would offset that enough to make waiting worthwhile...

I would contact the school and explain your situation to them. A month is a long time to wait without taking any action.

I'm not sure about all the schools listed, but I know for sure that NSUCOM and LECOM require a DO letter in general. However, they do offer interview invites before the letter arrives. I know this because a bunch of students in my interview group just needed their letters to be submitted for their application to become complete. The only thing is that even though you get an interview, they won't give an acceptance until the file is complete, with all letters in. Hope this helps and good luck 🙂

As ShyRem stated PCOM doesnt require one...But I dont think it will hurt considering how late in the cycle it is.

I received an invite before PCOM received my DO Letters. This was with the previous admissions staff years ago so things may be different now. I say submit ASAP. Kind of late in the season to be applying. I had my apps in around July. Good Luck.

Thank you all for your responses--this gives me hope that my interviews won't be held up by the letter.

Incidentally, I finished my ACOMAS application way back in October (I took the August MCAT, so my scores weren't in until then), but it took them until *1 January* to verify it! Does anyone know why they're so slow?!?!? I couldn't believe it took them that long to get my primary app to the schools.... Anyway, my secondaries to the schools are done and turned in (got them all in within a week of each school receiving the ACOMAS app)--it's only the D.O. letter that's missing. Believe me, I know it's late...but I personally had no control over the timing. 🙁

Here's to hoping there are still interviews and seats left! :luck:
