Is this suit okay? I am very petite and had great difficulty finding anything that would fit (even with tailoring). I plan to wear tights and black (very small heel) pumps.

It's usually advised to go with a solid color suit in a traditional color (black, brown, navy blue, or grey.) Houndstooth is a little loud and borders that fine line between formal/informal. You definitely have a little more room for variance as a female (as opposed to males who would never be able to pull off anything but a traditional suit in this situation,) but an older, more conservative interviewer might think it's too loud and somewhat unprofessional. It'd be a gamble in my opinion.

Have you tried looking at a Banana Republic store? They have a full line of petite clothing now that goes down to XXS or XXXS (I can't remember which for sure--I stopped working there back in June.) A tailor then could make it a perfect fit most likely, and their clothing is very professional in both appearance and quality (I bought my interview suit there.)

I think the suit is fine. Most everyone will be wearing black suits so standing out a little and not in a flashy way is good. You should also check out Ann Taylor petite suits. IMO they have some nice stuff that is not so traditional nor too flashy.

I love Banana Republic too - you can't go wrong with their clothes. Since we have a dress code at school, I bought a lot of clothes from there. Can't wait for the post holiday 70% off sale. 🙂

Good luck on your interview!

I bought my skirt suit at ANN TAYLOR LOFT. You can definitely find your size there..Mine was 0P btw and it fits perfectly..

I checked out the link that you posted. The suit is so cute! 🙂 It's really unique and most interviewees that I saw went with the traditional (black) suits..It would be cool to wear something different..🙂

Thanks for the excellent feedback. I am going to check out Ann Taylor Loft today. My first interview is in a week and a half, so I am really pushing it now. I may try to go with a more conservative look for the first interview, and then decide if I could pull off the houndstooth for future interviews. I am just very concerned about sticking out in a bad way, which I never imagined would be the case with my first suit.

IMHO that suit is too much for an interview. Not formal or professional enough. I had great luck at Marshalls actually finding a black, formal Calvin Klein 0P suit for extremely cheap.

Thanks everyone. I am now the proud owner of a black scuba skirt suit (0P) from Ann Taylor LOFT. I absolutely fell in love with that store! Is a salmon colored blouse underneath too much?

I think a salmon blouse would be fine. My mother disapproved of the salmon knit I was thinking about wearing with my black pants suit lol, but she's pretty conservative when it comes to these things. I wore a deep cerulean knit instead though so she wouldn't keep doubting my attire haha.

Glad you found something at Ann Taylor Loft. Can't wait to get a break from exams to do some shopping myself. The salmon shirt is fine too. A little color with a traditional suit looks great. I wore a purple shirt with my dark grey checkered AT suit. The most important thing in the interview is to be prepared and be yourself.

I also think houndstooth is perhaps not conservative enough. If you want to stand out just pick a dark conservative color that is not black - navy, dark grey, perhaps even dark brown.

I think a splash of color in the form of a colorful blouse is okay as long as the suit itself is a conservative dark color.

Best of luck on your interviews! :luck:

Thanks everyone! Now that I have the whole suit fiasco figured out, I can focus on what's really important for the interview...what to say. Best of luck to all!

Ann Taylor Loft is amazing, it's the only place I go for work attire anymore... and they have awesome sales as well. 🙂

I was frustrated after going into Macy's and The Men's Werehouse, and hearing "go with the power tie brah".
