I'm absolutely ecstatic that at this point in the cycle I've received invitations to interview at three great schools! Unfortunately though, two of the schools have overlapping interview dates. I reached out to one of the schools to see if there's any chance that another date might become available, but in this situation, what would be the best course of action?

I would be very happy to attend either school, so I would hate to have to decline one of the interviews to accommodate the other, especially since there's no guarantee that I'd get in. Is this a common issue? How likely is it that I'll be able to get it rescheduled? (The invite came today so I'm trying to get the scheduling issue sorted out as soon as possible for everyone involved).

Ask the most recent school for an alternate date. Schools will usually let you change your date due to conflicts, but just once- so be sure to know your calendar

Programs do not know when other programs schedule interviews with the remarkable exception of MSTP interview programs (they do share a calendar to avoid conflicts which are much more frequent).

I have had some applicants try the double-booking strategy. Don't do that unless you really want to be rejected post-interview somewhere.

Unfortunately one is an MSTP interview while the other is MD/PhD. The overlap between the two interviews is also about 3 hours 😅 I suppose the best I can do is email/call both programs starting with the more recent one and seeing what options they have as far as rescheduling. I definitely don’t think I could pull off a double-booking

Definitely put them on different days. They should be able to accommodate you.
