I just took mine in front of a wall. Photoshopped it to be six 2"x2" pictures on a standard 4"x6" photo..printed them off at wal-mart and cut them out myself. All for a low cost of $0.19.
I went to a CVS that did passport photos. It only cost a few bucks, the pictures looked good, and then they were the right size. Plenty of people take their own picture though and it looks totally fine.

First, I took it in front of a restaurant with a friend's very professional and expensive camera. The results came out sharp and wonderfully colored, but my parents didn't like my outfit and I didn't like my smiles.
Then.. I was planning to go to a studio that took photos for business cards, but it only gave you 5 poses for $25!!
In the end, I actually took it in front of my white garage. Then photoshopped/cropped it to a 2x2 and increased the brightness/hue contrast a little bit to make it less dull since my camera is not the best quality. =) Then printed it and cut it out.
I was afraid with studio pictures that I might not like the pictures in the end (which matters the most to me over the price), so the cheaper way was to take the picture myself so I can find a picture that I liked.
My photo turned out better than the photo that my friend took with a professional camera. They look exactly like passport headshots. =) They cost $2 at Target photo total (but that was because Target charges a $1.50 for <$5 purchase).

When I mailed my 2x2 photo to the schools that required it along with the application fee, I took it at a studio. But for my upcoming interview they said that they prefer to send a picture via e-mail. Do you think that its okay if a send a picture of myself that was taken at an engagement party (I am conservatively dressed in the photo) or should I take another picture in front of a white wall and send that one?
