Does anyone have any suggestions for interview preparation? My stats are all good, but I'm really worried about the interviews. Are there any good sources that provide typical questions? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Get with some other pre-dent buddies and quiz each other over likely questions. I suggest also looking at the interview feedbacks here at SDN to get some specific questions.

Stay calm, eat a good breakfast the day of your interview, have questions ready to ask, practice your answers to likely questions ahead of time, and generally act like an interested professional. 🙂

Most of these are for med school, but they overlap nicely with what you'll be getting from dental schools.

everyone says to practise a lot for the interview...but i was wondering if anyone has just gone straight into an interview without much practise? and if you did, how did you do?

i have been looking over questions, and have a very brief idea of what i could possibly say...but i haven't practised with friends or anything...nor have i really bothered to recite answers to myself...

mainly, this method doesn't work for me...i know it's not the real thing, and if i practise reciting answers, i feel like i'm just talking to myself...so i'm a bit less tactful that way...

so i was thinking about just going in there, and carrying on the conversation...without much prior practise...waht do you all think?

Just know yourself and your application. Know why you want to be a dentist. Have some questions in mind. Relax and be yourself. I didn't do any mock interviews and was fine. If you want to practice, just have someone ask you why you want to be a dentist and tell me about yourself. Other than that it's just about carrying on a conversation.

see, that's what i'm thinking...when i have someone to talk to, i'll be okay i think...but when i'm talking to myself, i can't seem to make anything come out smoothly...so it's just a waste of time...

i guess i'll just think of something for each question..just to get the basic idea..and just go in there and do it... =p

I dunno if you've already seen this, but I found this to be very useful in seeing what others had to say about their experiences during their interviews...

I went into my only interview unprepared. I figured, if they like me, they like me. But of course, I knew answers to question such as why I want to be a dentist and such, most of which, I have already answered in primary or secondary app. My interview went really well. I just chatted with the interviewer, basically, about school, what my plans/goals are in dentistry, my personal background, and some F's on my transcript :X. i was sincere, and genuine.

so, my advice is, be sincere, genuine, and be yourself. and if you are going into dentistry for the money, and only the money, then maybe dentistry is not for you. but if so, don't be so foolish and tell that to the interviewer.

Good luck, and go get them!

Every dentist and their assistants I shadowed all asked me why I want to be a dentist, so I guess that was good practice.

i think the key is confidence.

especially with me.

if i don't walk confidently into a room, i'll feel weak and stupid.

i think i need a good power trip before the interview, that way when i walk in i feel powerful and confident.

if i dont feel that way, i'll be "off" and not "on", as i'd like to be.

does anyone else know what i mean?

i mean, i gotta be in the "mood" for the interview.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm the same way. If I am not in the "mood", then I know it will be a flop. My mind has to be clear, but over anything, I have to have a genuine passion or interest in whatever I am interviewing for because all of that will come out during the interview and I'll shine. I think like a number of people have said. Be relaxed having the jitters will definitely have your mind cluttered and things may not be able to come out the way you would want them to...
