I'm going to be applying next cycle. However, I transferred after my freshman year from a top private university (not HYPSM but pretty close) to a top public one. The public one is not my home state or significantly cheaper. My reasons for transferring were pretty much entirely non-academic, as I hated the environment at my old school. I've done very well at the new school although my grades were around the same before transferring as well. Will I be asked why I transferred during interviews, and if so, can I answer truthfully?

It's really hard to say whether you will be asked or not; but based on your story I don't see anything wrong with being honest though I don't know too many details. Unless you are interviewing at the school you transferred from lol.

IF you're asked, just tell the truth. This is trivial.

If there are things on your application that you think you might get asked, I highly suggest being prepared to answer them.

can I answer truthfully?
You better answer truthfully
