Hey all,

I have an interview next month and I was curious. If I am asked "why do you want to be a physician." Would it be appropriate to respond with my story and journey as to how I decided I want to be a physician and some of the reasons why?

Thank you

Don't exactly reiterate your PS. Assume they have read it. Many will have done so soon before the interview begins. Don't talk for more than two minutes. The interviewer has a lot of other ground to cover. If they want you to expand, they will ask.

Being concise is the key, make sure you practice enough, but don't come off too rehearsed. Also don't ramble in your answer, it would be good to write a few bullet points on a card as an outline

As long as you don't turn your answer into another thirteen reasons why, you should be fine.

Be careful with being rehearsed because being 1000% yourself, open and honest is what they're looking for. According to an adcom from a top five school, "a rehearsed applicant is an auto reject".

Agree. What would you say if your gramma asked the question?

Here's one that'll get you in "to help people"!

Jokes aside, that question is unique to everyone. Be yourself. You looked good on paper on your primary and secondaries. They wouldn't have bothered to interview you if you didn't "wow" them on your paper applications.

Be concise and yourself. Do note that you may be asked why you chose to be a physician rather than a physician's assistant or a nurse practitioner.

You could also be asked why not other non-health related careers based on your answer. I was asked that in a mock interview based on my answer.

Thanks for all the feedback! i was afraid they would get irritated if i told them my story as well as my motivation instead of just why i want to be a physician

I'm not sure what else you could reasonably talk about.

Having a justification for why you want to be a physician above all other healthcare fields as well as non-healthcare fields related to your passion may mean the difference between acceptance and waitlist.
