I am doing a project for my school about professions I am interested in. If someone could answer these questions for me that would be really amazing and helpful for me.

1. How difficult was becoming an O.D.?

2. Do you have any outstanding student loans?

3. If the answer to the above question is no, have you ever?

4. On a scale of 1 to 13 how enjoyable do you find your job?

5. Why did you choose to become an Optometrist?

6. What benefits does your position provide?

7. How much free time does your job leave you with?

1. School was definitely demanding. But not impossible. I often questioned whether or not I should've just went to med school. I worked during years 1 and 2 about 10-12 hours a week. Working is not a good option for everyone though.

2. Outstanding? Yeah, real outstanding. They f#cking suck. I pay roughly $2300/month and I'm not on the super hero repayment schedule. At that rate I believe I'll have them paid off in 15 years.

4. 1 to 13? Screw your scale I'll use my own arbitrary scale. On a scale from 1 to 7 I like my job about 4 most days with an occasional 5 and 3 sprinkled in here and there.

5. Because I like physics/math, science, medicine, business, etc. Also because I have 1001 interests outside of optometry; I figured I would be able to fulfill my other interests and desires while not being a slave to my job/profession.

6. I'm part of a minority of ODs that has full medical, dental, vision, CE reimbursement, license and insurance reimbursement, paid vacation and other benefits.

7. I work 5.5 to 6 days a week. Generally I work 10-7 Mondays and 8-4 throughout the week. Saturdays I fill-in at 2 offices. I usually work around 45 hours a week so I have a good amount of free time although it really doesn't feel like it because I have so many time consuming hobbies that I will not compromise.
