Have a interview coming up at UPENN and even though I heard it is pretty laid back, I would still like to know if dental schools in general expect their applicants to know the ins and outs of the healthcare reform and insurance things on top of that. i haven't had much experience with insurance stuff.

I interviewed at several schools, including Penn, and none of them asked about health insurance reform. I don't think they expect pre-dents to know much about that issue.

I was asked about it at one school. But shrug, if you don't know anything about it, just say so. They won't hold it against you, and it's better to be uninformed than to regurgitate sound bites, especially on this kind of a polarizing subject.

This is a bit difficult to answer. My advice is, DON'T bring this topic up, and they (most likely) won't either.

They might however expect an applicant to know whats going on with dentistry today (mid-level providers, amalgam debate, under served)... but usually, they don't bring these up.
