What is your ratio of Interviews:Schools you applied to (secondaries submitted)?

Is there an average ratio? Someone told me 1:10 is average, but it sounds rather arbitrary.

that seems low. mine is currently 1:2. many people on SDN will have like 1:1.3 or something crazy... but even for non-SDN, i would guess that 1:10 is still very low.

I'm sitting at 1:2 now but still haven't heard from most schools so that could go to 1:1.5 or better. Apply EARLY and when you're ready...and make sure to apply to a wide range of schools to make sure you're competitive. I've gotten interviews (or sometimes holds) at most of my match schools and even a few bites from my reach schools and I would say my stats are probably less impressive than most top candidates.

Just in case the OP is asking about the AVERAGE interview to applications, it varies a lot from school to school. However, a big chunk of schools interview about 1000 students and receive something along the lines of 4k-6k applications. Some schools offer fewer interviews and some have a lot more applicants. Just consult the MSAR.

I would never ask this question of SDNers. This is not a representative population...

6:28
= 3:14

thats quite bad huh

approx 1:5... man sucks

Reminder:

Ratio - (# success) : (# not success)
Fraction or Percentage- (# success)/(# total tries)

My guess would be 1:2-3 (or 25% to 33%). Just a complete guess. 🙂

Do the math. There are 42000+ applicants per year, and the average number of applications sent by each applicant is about 13, so there are usually a 42000 x 13 = 546,000 applications processed by all med schools each year. Generally, schools interview between 300-1500 candidates each year, let's just say the average is around 900, then the number of interviews handed out each year is about 900 x 130 = 117,000.

So about 120,000 interviews vs. 550,000 applications, roughly a 1:5 ratio. Now this is a very rough estimate, so the actual numbers can very well vary.

i think that What are my Chances Excel sheet would make this an easy calc since they have all the numbers

i went down the spreadsheet (idk why, kinda dorky), summed up the total interviewed columns of US allo schools (+ 1 MD school and maybe the canadian schools) divided by the total applied # column

76701 interviewed / 559335 applied = 13.7% interviewed

Ah, I didn't know about that spreadsheet, looks like the average school interviews considerably less than 900 people. So it's a 1:7.3 ratio.

These ratios are kind of useless unless you post how many schools you applied to.
