I found a reasonably priced suit that is black with light pin stripes. I like the suit but I have heard some negative opinions on the pin stripes while searching the archives. Please weigh in if you have a sense of fashion.

As long as it's a very light pinstripe, you will be fine. You just want to avoid the large pronounced pinstripes that would make you look like a 1920's gangster. Pinstripe suits are my favorite, I have two and even had wore a pinstripe tux for my wedding.

Agreed, subtle stripes seem fine.

Actually I had the same question, thanks for asking it first 🙂 I'm thinking the really light pinstripes are usually the one that are really closely spaced together, as opposed to the bold, widely spaced ones? Let me know if that makes sense

i bought a new suit last night, and it is pinstriped. they are very light, and spaced farther apart. there was this other VERY NICE suit w/ brighter, closer stripes, but it was definitely too showy....it was awesome though, i wanted that one, but of course, can't be showy........i would go for farther spacing....according to the person who helped me, pinstripes are good for interviews as long as they are not flashy....you'll know if it's flashy

Anyone planning on using a grey/gray suit? Or is is black and navy for everyone.

trust me - as long as you don't look ridiculous, it doesn't matter what you wear. let your credentials and your confidence speak for you.

i bought a pinstripe as well. when it comes to determining the subtlety of the stripes, it really depends on who you ask. but then again, i can't really help it if my interviewer decides to judge me by the suit i'm wearing. i haven't had any interviews yet, but i'm thinking we'll be fine.

I think Armani would be able to speak better for me at least. 😛

i am reasonably certain that i was wearing the most impeccably tailored and expensive suit at any of my interviews. i am also probably the only one from my cohort sitting at home right now and not at an orientation. it just doesn't matter.

Im kinda thinking a dark gray would be better for me. I look to FBI'ish in my black suit.

So you are saying to put a few holes in my suit. Got it 👍

lol, one of the guys at my interview had the "alfani seperates" tags still sewn on his sleeve: luckily i helped him get rid of them before his second interview...

i think it would be hilarious to show up with a "hole-y" suit. 🙂 personal a/c to cool you off after the anxiety sweats!

hey narc, you don't like light gray? i just like brighter colors...it makes me feel my age...like, dark colors just makes me feel like i'm playing dress-up..it's too adult for me. HAHAHA

wow, i should work on that whole maturity thing before i get/go to an interview!

Gray for me, I don't believe in black interview suits... just a personal thing I guess.

Grey and a semi light shirt... probably a striped tie
Whats the deal on the tie... and how many colors should I be sporting?
1 tie color matches shirt, right? AHHH!!!

if everyone is switching to grey to stand out from black, maybe i should go for black 🙄

As long as the suit is white and the stripes are pink, you're golden. Otherwise it's a bit much.

I just read this thread and now I'm properly suicidal. Thanks, guys.

Interview season, once more. Poo.

come on. there are applicants who gave it their *best* shot last cycle and didn't get in. i feel for them. but you claim you're depressed because you didn't get in with stellar stats after applying to five top-ten schools while out of the country? just how much validation are you fishing for, because i sure as heck don't feel sorry for you? you're applying more strategically this time and you'll be fine.

just because you're jealous of her stats doesn't give you the right to flame her. this process is stressful for EVERYONE, no matter how stellar your stats are. there's no such think as a shoe-in medical school applicant-- especially at some of the top schools that people aspire to. yes, she will be fine and become a great doctor someday, but she still has to sit around waiting for interviews and preparing to sell herself to the adcoms just like the rest of us.

You could be that guy from that old Mento's commercial.

one of my interview suits is charcoal with pink pinstripes. my knowledgable sisters okayed it. 👍 go pinstripes!

and in case anyone needs more data: i did not wear pinstripes last year, and was not accepted.

i actually almost bought that same exact set up. i forgot what it was about that exact suit that i didn't go with it.

Crapola it looks like I have to go shopping... and I need a fashion consultant.

sure i would love to have earned her excellent mcat score, and i'm confident i couldn't have earned it myself without luck. but i'm optimistic enough for myself with a 33, and that gets to the point of my post. as you stated "she will be fine" despite her hyperbolically pessimistic comments here and on her mdapps profile. getting into a top school is a luxury for anyone, and i save my encouragement for folks who will have to work really hard to get in *anywhere*. our stress ~= their stress.

I think we can safely deduce that for all x, x wears pin stripes <---> x gets accepted

Word. Charcoal grey is the new black, and in keeping with the thread, I'm a pinstripes guy, as well.

Mine is actually dark grey with pinstripes. So, to answer the OPs question, personally, I think [muted vertical] pinstripes look fine.

Although I didn't originally buy into the stay away from black mantra, after having been to 2 interviews and seeing all of the solid black suits, I would definitely recommend staying away from black. The school presentations looked more like eulogies with all of the black suits in the audience!

Who teaches premeds how to dress? Seriously. Any of the interview workshops at my UG school actually recommended navy as the "default" interview suit color. I've seen very few navy suits at my interviews. For those that haven't bought their suit yet, I would recommend a nice solid navy suit, since it has excellent utility.

i'm going with my black suit only because i own it already..... but it's a little different than plain black.... it has alternating vertical stripes of a matte black and a satiny black..... very sophisticated without being showy. not sure what color shirt yet.... but i'm thinking a nice bold blue to show off my eyes.

I went with black but only because it was the best suit I could find. Fashionable yet conservative still. And it has teal and white very thin pin stripes. I know its like a funeral procession with everyone in black, but I couldn't pass up this suit 🙂

Hey guys, I was joking. I'm not actually suicidal, ok?

Black sounds good to me. I would not mind blending in. Heck, I will rely on my interviewing skills and applicant file to make me stand out versus risking standing out negatively for my attire (might be self consious being the only grey suit in a sea of black? Standing out like that may be a good thing, but I just don't want to introduce yet another variable for me to have to keep thinking about). If have never heard of someone getting rejected for fitting in too much.

That is not a bad idea, since there are always a few that DO stand out in a negative way. And you're absolutely right that you won't be rejected for blending in. Dressing well just helps you to make an even better first impression.

"Standard" interview attire for men is usually: Navy suit, (match socks to pants, so navy socks,) white shirt (NON-buttoning collar -- I think it's called a French collar,) red tie, and cordovan belt and shoes (Oxford captoe shoes look young and professional.) If you are looking for a formulaic approach to interview attire, my advice would be to just go with that. You will look good AND stand out in the crowd of solid black suit wearing pre-meds (but CERTAINLY not in a negative way.) A navy suit is appropriate for any occasion, so you will get excellent utility out of it. A navy-with-pinstripes suit is also an excellent choice for an interview suit, but has a little bit less utility. Then again, we are talking about medical school admissions here, so the whole utility argument probably isn't very relevant. Most probably won't touch the suit for another 4 years, if ever.

I think any suit is great. Especially the birthday type.

Pinstripes can be hot for sure. I think it shows a certain confidence as long as you stay on the lower end of the pimp scale.

On a side note, I think the hot new color for ties is a bold lavendar. That looks pretty sharp with black and gray.

I'm a girl, but I appreciate a guy in a nice looking suit. Pinstripes are where its at....and purple ties (pretty sweet looking with a crisp white shirt).

I think pinstripes are sexy as long as they are not to obvious. Just my opinion, though. 😍

At my Emory interview last year the secretary pointed out the one person wearing gray and said "Wow, it's really something when the standout flamboyant color is gray!" Everyone else (about 20 or so that interview day) was dressed in black . . .

I have a black suit with light green, dashed pinstripes. It was from Ann Taylor. Everyone else at the interview I had where I got accepted was wearing a black suit, some with similarly light colored pinstripes.
