what up with the no responses...?

I don't think there is a lot of action on this forum, especially for serious minded derm applicants. I am applying to derm but have seen really nothing on this forum from other derm applicants, compared to other forums which are booming! I would be interested as well to hear from other derm applicants. So far, I have heard nothing...I am hoping that things will pick up once dean's letters go out, as I have heard that there is a possibility that most programs just wait until after Nov 1st. I applied to 37 programs despite strong encouragement by my program director to apply to 60...I used the rest of my money to apply towards a backup program, which is becoming more and more appealing with each day that I do not hear anything from the derm programs! How about you adamant?

Man I feel the same way. like we are in a black hole. I only heard from Buffalo--rejected. I hope that did NOT set the tone... 😡

How many programs did you apply to?

dlc6- I applied to 60 programs. Hopefully something will start to happen soon. Everybody I know already has lots of interviews for other fields.

Did you apply to another field as a backup or just derm and preliminary year positions?

Hey all,

I applied to 45. No back-up (our dean won't allow us to!)

Anyway, from what I have heard we should not be expecting much action as far as interview offers for the next few weeks (I have heard that most invites go out after Thanksgiving - but given how little anyone will talk about ANYTHING derm - that could be totally wrong!)

Which other derm boards are "booming"? I'm not familiar with any besides the ezboard forum...

Hey Jessica! How come your dean won't allow you to apply for a backup? Everyone over here can't stress enough how important it is to apply for a backup...they tell this to practically everyone! But thank you so much for that information...I really had no idea that we would have to wait so long to here from them! Meanwhile, all of these preliminary interview offers are coming in and I don't know what to do with them...I am just scheduling them all in December for now and hopefully I will have heard from some of the derm programs by then. As of right now, I am ready to just go with my backup plan because I have already started interviewing with those programs. Oh well, I guess I will just have to be patient with the dermies!

1. i know you guys are already doing this OCD styles, but check ERAS/your e-mail often. interview offers come in and are often first-come, first-served. some programs will put out out more invites than spots. you call in to schedule five hours after the e-mail is delivered and you may be SOL. it's happened.

2. they may have stopped doing this, but mt sinai used to invite basically all applicants to "interview". what happens instead is you fly out, sit through a drug lunch/presentation with 150 other people, and the program makes a few bucks? for setting up the whole dog-and-pony show for the drug company. really really seedy.

3. prelim/transitional spots are infinitely easier to schedule and re-schedule compared to derm interviews. do as many as you can early especially if it's local (but defintiely strategize if you can arrange a derm/prelim interview in one trip). seriously, you guys shouldn't do more than 8 or 9 of these interviews unless you like having your ego stroked.

4. be nice to the residents.

lots and lots of luck.

Thanks, that is solid advice.

Relax, the bulk of derm interviews don't even get offered before Thanksgiving... The ezboard site, despite the ridiculous threads that can get started there, is still your best source of info on who's offered and who hasn't.

Oh, and to the people who applied to 35-45 programs - I'd apply to more if it's not too late! I think a bunch of programs have 11/15 deadlines...

i agree, the ezboard site was classic. peaked about 3 years ago before it petered out to what it is today. still, it wouldn't be bad to sift through some of the old posts.

still VERY useful is the board's links to match list of the past 4 years. applying to a program that has 2 spots and that has been consistently "inbred" the past 3 years would be a waste of $50 right there. unless you are absolutely god's gift to derm, applying to at least 45-50 programs would be prudent.

From what I have seen, EZ board derm has been reduced to nothing more then insecure people who find it necessary to ask ridiculous questions like:" If I got a 275 on Step I and II, AOA, am the inventor of Accutaine... do I have a chance" Honestly, if your CV is composed of such wonderful achievments you probably would not be asking this question. It is unfortunate that this board which was once useful is now a source of anguish and stress for students applying to derm. Don't sweat these posts.
This board, on the other hand, seems to be generally useful and helpful. Best of luck everyone.

by the way you spelled accutane, i'll assume you are pretty new to this game ...

as i was saying, the ezboard of 2002-2003 was a great place for unfiltered, uncensored discussion. it was (in)famous on the interview trails and you had program directors making comments about it and logging on to it! it was not uncommon for PGY-2 openings or scramble spots to be first announced on that board. yes, half of it was as you described, but i see even more of that same drivel on this board, admixed with "i have a rash" threads. i mean, sifting through the threads from 2-3 years ago yields great info. i think many of the current applicants could benefit from the post-match laments of "i wish i knew that before the match" from previous applicants. and as i said, the match lists of the past 3 years is a useful resource.

yes, it is a shell of it's former self, but erin does a great job in keeping ezboard relevant.

I always knew derm was competitive but the caliber of derm applicants on here is really impressive. I wonder how long it'll take until the derm "bubble" bursts and something else becomes competitive....FP anyone?

USMLE Step 1 220 Step 2 250
Class Rank Top 5/180
5 publications
Applied to: 65
Interviews 1

Yup...sounds scary!

So I'm guessing most derm applicants apply to a large, large number of programs?

Does anyone apply for a backup speciality? (Perhaps something in a less competitive field?) Or would that be considered a display of uncertainty/lack of confidence?

Thanks!

This is getting depressing!
I'm beginning to think that I won't get any interviews.
Just to clarify Step 1 -263 Step 2- 264
Class rank 1/65, AOA, some derm research not published yet, 1 case report submitted.

I think the fact that I go to Ponce in Puerto Rico is really hurting me. Nobody seems to know we are not FMG's. I just hope someone gives me a chance!!!

Sorry dude. Sounds like you're a great candidate. Did you do any outside Derm rotations?

Did you apply to the Univ of Puerto Rico? The Univ of Puerto Rico has an ACGME accreditted Derm program that accepts 2-3 residents a year. But it's a NON-ERAS program.

I did 2 outside rotations and they have not offered interviews yet but that will be my only hope. And as for Puerto Rico, I also did a rotation there-that is in ERAS now actually. I think my only hope is through the roatation places but I do not think it is fair. I feel like discrimination is occuring for me...

Just to clarify UPR is not on ERAS but does go through the regular match.

Those numbers are off the hook, 👍
I'm sure you'll get interviews soon enough. If you don't, man us mear mortals are in deep $hit when we apply next year. :scared:

Long, despite your awesome Step 1 score, you're still missing 2 major components before you can even think about matching derm...

1) Good knee pads
2) Lots of chapstick

No seriously, I think early interest in any competitive residency is a HUGE plus. Assuming you haven't done any derm-related research, I'd get involved ASAP. If you want derm bad enough, take a year off between 3rd and 4th year to do research. Someone on SDN suggested that oncologists doing melanoma research are a gold-mine for students interested in getting involved and getting published. See if that avenue proves fruitful for you. G'luck.

Stock up on antacids if you're applying next year! I am in the process of burning hole #17 though my stomach lining. At this rate, its going to be a loooooong application season.

😕 whats wrong with me???

How come no one posts their interviews or anything?

Hey everyone,
Any updates? I still have yet to hear from 26 programs (I applied to 37)...just wondering how everyone else is doing. I know at least one program I applied to will not be giving out interview invites until the middle of December so maybe that is the case with a lot of these programs.

Here's an update...

I posted 2 or 3 weeks ago with 2 interviews

Currently 4 interviews with plenty of rejection letters. Still stressin but who isn't.........

Here's an update from my camp:

I wish that I had applied to more programs! 9 invites (thanking my lucky stars! Though I don't know how excited to be given that this process seems so random... doesn't seem to be a magic number of interviews that you can get and breathe a sigh of relief! I know a girl who had 4 and matched at her #1, and another who had 14 interviews and didn't match!), I've gotten too many rejections to count (after I got four by email within a one hour period, I stopped counting... but hey, at least they let me know where I stand!) and still yet to hear from 1/3 of the places that I applied either way. That means there's still hope....

Best of luck to everyone else who is applying right now. Its nice to know I'm not the only one stressing. Just think, it will all be over before we know it!
