Interview Time: Why do you want to be a doctor?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You tell me yours and I tell you mine.

Everyone will probably come across this question during their interviews. Let's use this forum to practice! I'm curious to hear SDN people's stories 😀

Because I have a neuroscience degree, and I was under the impression it was either this or street performance

Well, why would I NOT want to be a doctor?

Sorry OP, I think most pre-meds will keep their real answers close to their chests until they are done interviewing. This is a really tough question to mull over but it is definitely worth investing the time to do properly. Good luck finding your answer!

You really should know the answer to this after having completed your personal statement and secondaries. If not, then you probably won't have to worry about interviews too much, so either way this particular question isn't worth worrying yourself over.

A condescending and useless post, thanks.

Because my last name is Acula and I want a humorous name tag. "Acula, MD." See? It's funny.

I think this is a good post, actually. We all have the passion, sure, but it's hard to put that into words without sounding cheesey or rehearsed or lame. I'm still figuring out how I'm going to say it, even though my personal statement was very good (according to many sources). For a lot of us, the desire comes from a simple place, but that wouldn't always make a great answer, would it? Good luck, OP. Try out a few answers on family members or friends who will give you honest feedback. Don't give up if you struggle to find that great "pitch" at first.

Oops. I started this thread because I thought we could all help each other prepare for the interviews. I was a teacher for several years and became interested in medicine after having to quit my job and take care of a family member who suffered a stroke. I know some people who have some interesting stories on how they got to applying for medical school. Sorry if most of y'all didn't find this post very helpful.
