Interview tips?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My first interview is coming up in 2 weeks and I'm extremeley nervous. I'm also a fairly shy and introverted person and afraid that it will hurt me in the interview process. How important is the interview? What are some interview tips for shy people and overcoming nervousness? X:

Umm, srsly? It'll be what makes or breaks you, depending on which school you apply to. I've heard interviews at UHCO are just a formality and aren't anything intimidating at all. On the other hand, I've heard at Nova someone got rejected after the interview because they didn't even make any eye contact.

But all that aside, I'm ITT seeking out tips as well, we sound a lot alike.

Advice pls?

If you are interviewing this early you are pretty much guaranteed a seat unless you had a borderline GPA and OAT scores.

The interview is probably the MOST important part of the application process. Your scores and grades get you in the door, but this is the make or break point. The schools need to know if you will be not only a good student, but make a good doctor. This requires you to break out of your comfort zone and be able to talk to people you don't know (I.e. your patients) multiple times a day, all day, every day. To me, doesn't seem like a career for an introvert, but I digress.byoure going to have to break out of that shell really quickly.

Make eye contact during your interview and BE CONFIDENT. Nobody wants to talk to somebody who gives two word answers and having a conversation with is less fun than a root canal. As far as overcoming nervousness, practice interviews with a friend. I can't say I know how you feel since you can probably tell from my tone that I'm fairly straightforward and extroverted. But have them give you feedback. The only way you're going to feel more confident is by doing some mock interviews.

I have 2 coming up, and although I am a little bit nervous I'm trying not to be. Don't be nervous! After all, you're going to be talking to someone about the career you have chosen, it should be pretty second nature.

Like said above, just be confident, be sincere. Don't make up answers or tell them what you think they want to hear, be honest. Making eye contact is very important. Also, do your research about the school before your interview (although I'm assuming you have done this extensively). They will probably ask you why you like their school, why you would like to go there over the rest, why you chose to apply there, etc.

This website has a fantastic resource for preparing for interviews here.

You'll find questions that students were asked at different schools, and the interview setting and all kinds of good info

If you've been invited to an interview, the school thinks you might be a good candidate: Your goal will not be to "win them over," so much as it will to demonstrate they haven't made the wrong decision in feeling you could be a good fit. What a college will want to see, basically, is:

1. You aren't insane.
2. You have familiarity with the profession you seek to enter.
3. You bear at least a reasonable ability to interact with others (they do understand you're probably nervous), as you'll need to when talking with patients, colleagues, etc.

Try to be coherent and comfortable, and to refrain from setting anything on fire — you ought to be fine.
