interview w/out shadowing a DO

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You can shadow an MD and it's still fine. Plus they can't tell whether you shadow a DO or not on your application unless you put it there. I didn't have that on my application and got two interviews.

My friend got an interview and she never shadowed anybody, MD or DO. She just did volunteer work.

did anyone get an interview w/out shadowing a DO?...🙄

I never shadowed a DO or MD...got an interview and was accepted way back in Oct...but they did question me about shadowing during the interview...its not essential to shadow but you must have the clinical experience especially with osteopathic physicians (I volunteered in ER with several DO's).

did you have a D.O recommendation for NSU?

Yes I did. It is required for NSU-COM and for other D.O. schools as well (I know LECOM-Brandenton requires a D.O. letter). Some D.O. schools take a letter from either D.O. or M.D. but D.O. is of course recommended.

I did not shadow a DO and have two interview invitations and one acceptance so far. I did sit down and talk extensively with two DOs who wrote my letters. I also have 10 years of clinical experience. I was asked at my DCOM interview if I had ever spent time with a DO and if I knew what osteopathic medicine was, but the time I spent talking with the two DOs and my ECs were enough.:luck:

Keep in mind that almost all schools require a letter from a doctor, and many of them require a letter from a DO. These letters often come from shadowing or volunteer experiences, but not always. I have gotten interview invites from all the DO schools that I applied to without a DO letter, but with 8 hours of DO shadowing. They might ask you about your shadowing or volunteer experience in your interview, so just be prepared to explain why you haven't be able to do it. Best Wishes!
