I am ready to receive all kinds of cuss words that are going to be thrown at me for starting this thread. I am sorry I can help it. I just need some kind of reference to think about for this crucial question that will come out in every interview at dental schools.

Here it is:
"Why Dentistry?"

I had a mock interview today. The instructor was like I need to work more on the part where I have explain about the reasons why I want to pursue dentistry as my future career. I just said I have great hand skills and enjoy meeting various people. What more do I have say?

So what is yours?

Autonomy
Owning a business
Life and death not commonly an issue
Hands on with incredible variety
Control over your practice

I have great hand skills and enjoy meeting various people.

If those are your criteria what makes dentistry more appealing than say: teaching ceramics classes, sidewalk artist, custom furniture maker, mechanic, etc...

I'm not trying to bust your hump - just pointing out how vague and generic your answer is. I know it's hard to describe why you are drawn to dentistry, but you should come up with something that sounds good even if its not entirely accurate. I'm not saying you should lie or make stuff up, but sometimes you just can't put your finger on what it is exactly you are trying to say.

Most people choose a couple of the following:
Wanted to be in healthcare
Wanted to work with people
Respect
Money
Hours
Autonomy
Like working with hands
Like the artistic aspect of dentistry
Knew somebody who was a dentist
... and the ever popular "I like helping people" 😀

Throw in a couple personal anecdotes about how you always liked going to your dentist as a kid, or how you helped out one summer at your uncles dental office, etc...

You don't need to come up with anything profound or emotionally moving, but if you give it some thought I'm sure you'll be able to put together something believable.
