Hey guys,

I have a interview coming up with an Osteopathic school. I am sure the question of whether I have applied to Allopathic schools will come. I filled out the primaries for MD schools, but decided against it and didn't fill out the secondaries. I don't really have a particular reason for not filling them out, but I didn't. What should I say in an interview if asked?

just say that. i filled out the primary but wanted the DO philosophy so i didn't continue. add a sweet touch to it.

I think you should just say you considered MD but ended up not applying to MD because you really like the DO philosophy.

IMHO, if you didn't send the secondaries your files will never be complete so they will never be looked at therefore it is as if you never applied. The DO schools have no way of knowing what schools you sent a primary to through AMCAS.

Don't read into this question. I nipped this one in the bud ASAP. I was asked if I applied to other schools and my response was "Yes." I was then asked if I applied to MD schools as well, my response was, "yes." I didn't drag this out. I just answered the question I was asked and waited for them to ask me another. Don't think you have to explain this unless they directly ask you to, which they usually don't. But if they do, say you are passionate about becoming a physician or something to that affect. Don't drag this answer out, because I can promise you that you will start to ramble and give them plenty of follow-up questions you don't want to be asked. Keep it simple.

Sorry about hijacking the thread. However, if you look at stats from AACOMAS, most DO applicants also apply MD. So, I wouldn't sweat it. But you need to spin it so it sounds like MD is your backup.

For example, if you only applied to in-state MD programs that is easy. You can say, " I applied to in-state MD programs to maximize my chances of an acceptance but I really prefer the DO approach."

If you applied more broadly I would go with, "I did apply to some MD programs but I would really like the opportunity to have the extra OMM skills to help patients."

You could go on about the emphasis on the "whole patient" and preventive care but I think that is kind of superfluous in today's world.

It is good to be prepared for this question but don't be so sure, I had one interview question of "what other schools did you apply to" but beyond that no one else asked. However, every single interview did ask "Why D.O." in one form or another. The later it gets in the interview cycle the more important I think that question becomes as schools will want to make sure it isn't just your backup option.

Just remember too, the school you are currently interviewing at IS your top choice--whether it is a MD or DO. Find reasons why you feel that the school is right for you and focus on those (if you can't find any reasons, you shouldn't go to the interview). Fact of the matter is if you get an acceptance to only that school, it is, most assuredly, your top choice.
