I was wondering if the adcom was aware of schools that one has applied to and if they ask, are they doing so to find out if we are honest or are they truly oblivious?

I don't know the answer to the question, but just be honest. Not worth taking the risk. It can not be stressed enough how important honesty is in professional school admissions. Basically, if you are caught in a lie, you will not get in.

You can always tell them that you don't feel comfortable answering that question, and that you don't think it's relevant. The number or the name of the other schools you applied to shouldn't be a considering factor in their decision anyway.

At my interview at NYU, my interviewer had the exact same document that AADSAS sends us that has all of our classes and our standardized GPA. In the top right corner is abbreviations of all the schools we applied to so I do believe they know where else we are applying.

At my interview at LLU, the interviewer ask if I had been accepted at any other schools. I was honest and reiterated my interest in LLU and why I would attend LLU over the other. You can do some thing similar.
