Interviewing at UNECOM

Does anyone else have an interview at UNECOM on January 24th? I am really excited and nervous about it. UNE is my top choice so I hope that I do well. Also, I was wondering if interviewing this late in the game is interviewing for a waitlist spot or do I actually have a chance? Thanks in advance.
 
Never go into an interview thinking you are interviewing for a wait list spot...that is a sure way to get put on the...well, the waitlist!

I highly doubt that any school has completely filled their roster yet.

Go to the interview and give your best...worry about the decision when the letter comes.
 
I remember them saying they will be interviewing into March so you are in good shape.

I had an interview at UNECOM on Nov. 30th. I got in last month, but released my seat last week. I thought it was a nice school, the people were nice, the location on the ocean was sweet, and there are lots of pretty girls. Anyway, just be relaxed in the interview, it wasnt stressful at all even though it was 4 on 1. The hardest question they asked me was "where do you see yourself in ten years",, and then when i was vague on the answer they asked me to describe a typical day in my dream world ten years down the road..., they also asked me what non-science course in my undegrad. career do i feel will be most useful in helping me suceed in a medical school setting. I said creative writing. The DO at the interview asked me what i learned from taking professional ethics. I said always be honest, which seemed to be exactly what he wanted to hear from the look on his face. They also asked me about my research and why DO. All i can say is just be your self, and be as relaxed and chilled out as possible. Also smile as much as possible, i dont think alot of people realize how important smiling is and how much it works (unless you have had a tip dependant job at some point). Good luck!

USArmyDoc, so you think you are going to give up the DO/PhD program? Where do you think you want to head instead? Huntergatherer, I dont know if I am in good shape, but at least I still have a chance. My GPA is pretty low and my MCAT is only a 25, but my EC's are pretty good and I think my LoR's are solid and speak to my desire to truly help people. So I guess all I have to do now is wait. Does anyone know of any good hotels close to campus that arent that expensive? I live in NH now, about 2 hours away but I want to be there bright and early the morning of the interview and not be exhausted from getting up at 4am and driving two hours to campus. Thanks for the encouragement everyone.
 
If you have an interview then your stats are good enough to get into the med school. You just need to have a solid interview.

I am giving up my seat. Moving to Maine is not the best thing for my family. Good luck.

After researching a bit and talking to people currently involved in what I am interested in, I think I am going to pass. I have been researching a Doctor of Public Health in Health Policy (DrPH). From my correspondence with many schools, they say a DrPh is for people who are interested in become health policy makers and leaders in the public health sector. A PhD is more research oriented. For that reason, I think I would be better off with a MPH (required) and a DrPH from some very well known institutions.

* I have not made any final decisions yet. I still have at least 1 one more interview.

you sent a dean letter or committee letter to PCOM?

I looked into that and applied to PCOM. So far, not a peep out of them. They are the only DO school not to respond to me. However, I still think a PhD is not the right way to go after speaking with someone. With that being said, I am going to do some more research.

Nah, I have not. Honestly, I am trying to avoid the possibility of having another school to choose from....lol

I hear PCOM is a really nice school and if throw that in coupled with a 2 hour drive from my house....its a very tempting deal.

UNECOM DO/PhD is good deal and is coupled with UMaine. So I believe you get your degree (PhD) from UMaine.

3 more years for a PhD is not bad at all.

If I was not almost done my PhD I would definitly do this program.

Can you tell me more about UNECOM's DO/PhD? I've surfed their site, but have not seen any offering of a PhD--even in association with UMaine.

I just know that it is a joint degree with UMaine and it is 3 yours on top of med school.
I believe they pay 2 years of DO school and 3 years of PhD, and you get a stipend when you are in PhD years. The exact brake down, I don't know. I assume it is 2 yrs Basic Science at UNECOM (with summers at UMaine, then 3 years PhD, then 2 years clinical. Does that sound right???? Anyone???

It is as follows:

1. 4 to 5 years of tuition remission plus a monthly stipend during your PhD years
2. You do your first two years of basic sciences and then your PhD followed by year 3 and 4.
3. It is joined with the University of Maine and you must idenitify a couple of things.
a. A mentor at either UNECOM or UMAine that is interested in the same work.
b. It is not guarranted rather you apply for it in your second year. From what I was told by my interviewer I would more than likely get it.
4. Negatives: It is a new program
5. Positives: It is a new program that allows for flexibility

Honestly, I think I am going to turn it down and I am not sure it is open to everyone. I think it may be brought up to certain students. HOWEVER, if you have an interest I am sure you can find your way into the program.
